Mobile Phone Charger Drains the Battery When Connected

04/04/2008 2:27 AM

Hi guys,

I have been using using Sony Ericsson mobile phone and their battery charger model DC4-3102EU, made in China by Astec, (input: 100-240 V, 150 mA and output 4.9V, 850 mA) supplied along with the mobile phone for more than a year now. Since last few days, I find that my mobile phone battery totally gets drained and goes dead within 2/3 minutes after connecting the charger. I guess the mobile charger instead of charging the phone, is acting as a load on the battery. What may be the reason? Is it possible to rectify the problem? Otherwise, I can buy a new charger, or throw the phone with the charger into deep sea.

Since there is no point in contacting Sony Ericsson, as I have found from my earlier experience, their service at local after sales service centres is very poor, the company based in Sweden does not reveal it's local contact details and bother even to reply to complaints on poor service. I would appreciate an answer from you guys.

My experience is that you need a new battery. They usually can handle so many cycles, and 2 years seems to be about it. However, chargers can go bad too. Closely inspect the charger wire for nicks and pulls, as these wires a quite fragile. If you have a voltage meter, check the output voltage.

I get about 2 years out of a phone, and the cost of replacing the battery is outweighed by just buying a new phone.

I agree with bricktop. But I just had the charger port on my phone die and refuse to recharge. Do you know anyone with the same or similar phone? Switch chargers and see who's phone goes dead. If not, vehicle chargers are dirt cheap here, and easier than reprogramming a new phone. Good luck.

Go green & free yourself from the grid, see www.g24i.com, flexible portable photovoltaic charger that even charges on a cloudy day or from artificial light sources. Cheers

Regards !

My experience is that a single diode is being used in most of the chargers made in China or else-where.

Check the rectifier [a single diode or a bridge rectifier] for short-circuit. As if it is the secondary of transformer becomes the load for battery & will drain it.

Hope may be of any help.

Thanks for all your comments.

I think, even the European and American companies now do not hesitate to dump cheap and poor quality goods in the market to compete and make profit. We, the buyers can not rely only on the brand or company's name for quality of goods and service, as before.

I guess it is not worth trying to repair the charger. I think it is better to throw the problematic charger supplied by Sony Ericsson and buy a new one.

This is very strange,i agree to check the charger by a multimeter, see if the voltage is correct, and two years for the battery is a little long time, usually, when have used a battery for two years, the battery can not hold much charges.maybe you can buy a replacement battery, its very cheep and also buy a 4.2V li-ion travel charger.
