I want to know the formula to calculate the equivalent span?

Thanks & Regards,

Is this an electrical question? What do you mean by equivalent span? Equivalent to what? State your question properly if you want to receive a useful answer.

I agree you.

Does he means piping span? Even he means that, What does he means with equivalent?

For piping span, I think I have the reply.

I think you are referring to Transmission line. There are two more terminologies associated with Transmission line namely wind span and weight span. Now to your question equivalent span is the distance between two towers (centre to centre) when the ground is perfectly plain. This is decided by the profile of the route and decided as to whether a long span with a tall tower there by reducing the no of towers or shorter tower with more towers and less span is economical. This is decided by the tower designers mostly. But along the route the span will vary depending upon the profile but it will be always less than the normal design span. Now a days software is used for this earlier days a template was used to locate the towers on the profile to see whether minimum clearance did exist.

Thank you very much for the reply, almost you are correct. Equivalent span is not distance between the two towers, if suppose one section cotains 10 spans means all are not the same length, to findout the average olden days they used sum of all spans divevd by no of spans but now there is formula that is I want to know.

Normal span is used to determine and compare the span lengths obtainable by using structures of different heights. It is given By

Normal Span in meters= C√(P-L)/DΧ0.3048 where P= ht of conductor support for which normal span is to be calculated,L =Conductor Clearence above ground level , C +ruling span in meters , D= conductor sag at ruling span C in metres

Ruling span for any line having spans l1, l2 l3 --Ln is =√Cube Of sum of spans -Ln divided by sum of span.Rule of thumb is average of all span +2/3 of difference between max and min span in the line. There is a lot more to explain but space and other constraints do not permit me to elaborate .Hope this is useful.best wishes.

Thank you very much the explanations and timely reply. Can you explain about the limitations of wind span and weight span. That is maximum limit we can go.

Thanks & Regards,

Ruling span or Equiv Span =sqrt((sum of each span cube)/(total span))
