air hose fittings

05/01/2008 12:42 PM

I have an air hose line that needs to connect to 4 air cylinders. What kind of fitting would be the most suitable?

Hello vscid,

I won't be a wise acre and say air fittings, but your request leaves to many assumptions for a fitting answer.

Assumption: This is for pneumatic air tools;

The cylinders are tanks and not compressors;

The connections are semi permanent not quick release;

You will not be exceeding 120 psi;

Your air hose is under 1 inch internal diameter;

Your cfm of your compressor is being exceeded by your demand on the short duration;

You already know the size fittings you need to meet your demand;

Please confirm or change any of these assumptions for better help;

Brad

Only go to Google and write "air hose connections", a thousands of sites will fight to sell you their products such as: Air hose connectors, couplers, nipples, fittings, up to complete air hose kit. And you will find a full specifications for each fitting, its size, design pressure, in addition to its price.

1. Find Air Hose Connectors and other Air Hose Fittings at Aubuchon

2. Find Air Hose Fittings in the Air Tools department at Aubuchon ...

Sounds like you need a distribution manifold.

We custom manufacture this kind of stuff. Don't worry, I'm not going to try and sell you something. LOL

I need to know your port size on the cylinders or existing fitting on the cylinders.

I need to know your maxium psi.

I need to know the size of the supply hose.

I need to know if there are any conditions that need to be dealt with like oil, fuel or other environmental conditions.

Is there a tight bend radius required?

I have legris fittings on my cylinders: 1/4 male.

max psi: 125.

hose: 3/8 x 11/16

No environmental conditions.

No tight bend radius.

Your 1/4 male (I assume pipe thread) on the cylinders is standard for a dash -4 hose (1/4" ID). You will have to adapt the 3/8 ID hose or use a jump size fitting.

For hose:

I would use a Female Elbow, female NPT to hose barb on the last cylinder.

The middle cylinder I would use a Female Branch Tee, female NPT with 2 (inline) hose barbs.

The first I would use something like a Gauge Tee so you can adapt the 3/8 hose onto the guage thread.

Then join it all with 1/4" standard air hose and use crimp rings to hold the hose in place. Clamps can be use if it is not a permanent installation.

Here is a link for these components: http://mdmetric.com/3550/3501-F.pdf

I would use a tee in the main line for each cylinder or use either a thread-o-let or weld-o-let and make a Branch off the main header and then tee off of it to each cylinder. If you come off the bottom of the main line you may need a water trap and/or a bleed valve. I usually try to come off the top so that the moisture will tend to stay in the header. As for the connection to the cylinder you could use a union and hard pipe it, a hose and with a swivel, union or some sort of quick connector. Without knowing more details it is impossible to give more exact suggestions. There are literally thousands of ways to do this as (Abdel has already suggested).

pipewelder,

I was thinking that o let fittings are used on 3" or larger welded pipes. How can I use it in my application?
