Horse Power Calculations of Pelton Turbine?

05/06/2008 4:26 PM

With the flow rate of 55litres/minute and with 0.6HP pump, whats the power you can generate if u place a pelton wheel along the flow. Please tell the equation that is being used.

Cheers

Vijay

Your flow will decrease because of the friction / obstruction caused by the nozzle of the pelton.

You will get out less power

Depending on the efficiency of the driver , drive, pump, friction , pelton, generator, transmission you may only get out (from thumb) 0.4 HP or less.

It would be better to use the energy directly.

Hello Hendrik

You get a GA point from me for your well-thought out answer.

Kind Regards....

Agreed. That's what I keep telling all these dreamers who think they can get more energy out than they put in.

Hai Hendrik...

Could u please tell me the equations that you used to calculate the power?

Cheers

Hi Vijay

I am not at any books at present and i will try by memory (slightly depleted at this stage)

I don't know of that small peltons but here is an example

At about 0.05 m³/s and 67m head a pelton will deliver about 27kw (80-85%)

To that you must add say 3 m for friction and static.k

A pump delivering that would require say 40kw (80-85%)

Ignoring other losses only 2/3 of the input power will be available on the shaft of the pelton.

Somebody with pump curves please verify!!

PS I bought myself one of the 7¨ ASUS PC - and not quite used to it. b ut it is really portable.

I would like to find a small steam Pelton or suitable turbine driven by parabolic solar power at the residential level. Any information is appreciated.
