60 Hz, 230 V Refrigerator for 50 Hz, 230V supply

05/13/2008 8:00 AM

Dear Sir,

Can we use 60 Hz, 230 V (1 ph) Refrigerator in 50 Hz, 230V (1 ph) power supply? will there be any problem of using 50 Hz as power supply frequency for 60 Hz equipments, if the voltage is the same.

Going from 60 to 50 is not as much of a problem as going the other way around.....Ths short answer is Yes you can use a 60 Hz 230 V 1Ph fridge on a 50 Hz 230 V 1 Ph.....The compressor motor in the fridge will not run a fast 1000 rpm versus 1200 or 1500 versus 1800 so the fridge will run longer to supply the same amount of cooling....which may result is a hotter running motor and a shorter motor life.......The inrush start-up current will be less in the 50 Hz application......than in its designed application......so start-up will not be a problem... ...Your V/Hz ration will be higher 230/60 versus 230 / 50.....

This is all asuming it is a stardard fridge and does not have any fancy electronic controls as the newer fridges have.......

Give it a try...It will not go up in smoke...but monitor the heat coming off the compreesor motor for the first couple of days....

Are you sure about that inrush current? I'd have bet the other way. I'd be willing to try a 50Hz motor on 60 Hz but think it would overheat the other way (back emf 'n'at)

No, if the motor is designed for 60Hz and you give it the same voltage at 50Hz, the windings will be UNDER excited, so the torque output will be about 17% less and speed will be 20% less. So all together, the HP output will be reduced by a little less than 20%. But on a load like a refrigerator, the lower speed will translate to less loading anyway (afinity laws), so the motor will likely survive the difference.

But it will be doing less work, i.e. pumping less refrigerant, and as mentioned, in a refrigerator, that means more time to extract heat. So all in all, the biggest risk is that the motor's duty cycle will increase, which means it will wear out faster. Plus if the fridge mfr was skimpy on the motor design to begin with and it cannot take the extra run time, it may deteriorate really fast.

tchapman; I would not worry to much the motor will run slower work less hard plus the liquid freon cools the motor i do not think the electronic controls would know the different between 50/60 cycles perry

yes my frend you can used your refrigerator because you have same specification with your supply.you dont take any risk for using that one because your said appliances design for 50-60 frequency..
