Hi 'guest',

If you use the appropriate μ/filter to filter the oil first? You should then be able to process it as a biofuel.

By burned oils I'm thinking scorched or blacked from heat.

Biodiesel is produced by Transesterification.

The subject is deep to say the least.

Get a copy of The Biodiesel Handbook Editors Gerhard Knothe, Jon Van Gerpen, Jurgen Krahl. 2005 AOCS Press.

If you are interested in the home brew google biodiesel titration.

Am I missing something here? I thought the word "biodiesel" explicitly means that the fuel is derived from some sort of oil that's extracted from some sort of crop. A small point, admittedly, but somewhat significant on CR4.

Hey vermin,

It also includes rendered animal fats for feed stock as well as plant based oils.

I'm guessing that the oils are from a deep fat fryer that darken with use. If he is referring to blackened engine oil he is in for a difficult time.

Hello Aggelos K., just a point of reference and no admonishment, but typing in all capital letters is considered YELLING! Of course when I started computers lower case was all you had without a lot of extra work. But I thought you would like to know. No offence taken by anyone on this thread but some are not to tolerant

If you can not find the book let me know.

Here's the best couple of sources I know.

Depending on th quality of the feedstock, you may need a multiple step process.

You can also look up the filtration technology on myfastfuel.com. You can filter used crankcase oil, and mix it 80/20 with diesel and burn it. I found it through Farm Show magazine. Good luck!

What oil is it - how did it get burnt in the first place?

If it is mineral oil (will not be bio-) then if it has a low flash point then it will burn as is - if not blend it with some normal diesel or kerosene to get the initial ignition.

If it is a vegetable oil then the burnt components - probably carbon black will be unimportant - the main oils should then respond to the normal methods of splitting the fatty acids off with alkali and reacting it with methanol.

This would be far better than just dumping it.

Methanol is a reactant - glycerin is a by-product of the process.

Believe it or not ... Powerblock tv hasan eppisode devoted to this.

Goto www.powerblock.com and look for Extreme 4X4 they have info on the method and places to get the gear to make your own biodiesel.
