IBM: water-cooled datacenter

06/03/2008 12:33 PM

From Green Tech blog GoodCleanTech
(http://www.goodcleantech.com/2008/05/video_ibms_datacenter_cooling.php)

"Last month we mentioned IBM's new innovative approach to trapping access heat from its Zurich-based datacenter and reusing it to warm a local swimming pool. However, until now, we knew little of this new form of heat recycling and remained curious as to how the heat was actually captured and channeled. "

Back in the early 70's IBM mainframes used water cooling and continued to do so for decades, Amdahl and Hitachi also used water cooling, Amdahl did not embrace the technique willingly but eventually even they had to.

You are right, the IBM 308x and 3090x series mainframes were water cooled.

Do you recall those systems doubling as a water heater too? Seems like an effort to be "greener."

Greener and more efficient, as well as less maintenance.

What would happen if there was a leak? Are the components waterproof?
