Optical Image Sensor for MCP

06/06/2008 9:50 PM

Hello Friends

I have a Microchannel plate and I need to capture optical image in 60mm diameter area with 50 micron resolution. Is that possible?

Hi

Do you know any stand device that I can mount along with MCP?

Hy Shyam,

you need 1200x1200 pixels each 50x50µm.

This is not available as area is costly.

So you need an imaging of your MCP output plane onto a CCD image sensor.

These are easiest as complete cameras, get one with 1.4 to 2 megapixel or slightly more.

I have good experience with coupling a Nikon 950 (not enough pixel) (Nikon 4500 is better suited but both are out of sale since years) to a high performance optical microscope (Leitz Ergolux) and many problems with lighting blown away.

This is perfect in matching to microscope eyepieces as the filter thread of the camera can be screwed directly onto the eyepiece.

You need a 1:8 or near this figure demagnification which is easily realised within the cameras range of distance.

This equipped with a metal tube of suitable length and mounting is all you need.

(Be careful with plastic tubing, may be a bit transparent to IR.)

Humm

Cost is not much of a criteria for me for this application and can pump $10000 easily. Now I need about 4 mega pixel in CCD and some magnification to focus on to 60mm active area that is near to it. Phosphor screen gives somewhat blue-greenish-yellow image. I can ask demo by a trader if I know which one to ask for.

I may need some background illumination to raise the image registration chances. I also need to capture image for longer duration keeping the CCD in integration mode. Just one short will not do as events are appearing in time and I need to capture an average value of an image.

Events last only 1ns but phosphor persistence is pretty longer so I can see through necked eye.

Dear Shyam,

above link shows one of the best cameras available,

Dr.F.Fleischmann is building these and many other optimised cameras for astronomy and related purposes.

These have a long-time exposure possibility which is difficult to get from standard cameras.

If you are using a phosphor screen on fibre optic you can couple a fibre optic taper to reduce the image to fit a CCD footprint. Alternatively you can lens couple the image to a CCD camera. Most cameras will be able to work with integrating software.

These are available, Kodak KAI 4020 is 2056 x 2062 7.4µm pixels, Kodak KAI 11000 is 4032 x 2688 9µm pixels. I expect that there are others but you are right, they are not cheap.

Hi Nigh,

I had in mind pixels each 50x50µm,

so a direct coupling without intermediate optics is not possible with readily available chips.
