charging batteries from a solar panel

06/13/2008 6:52 PM

I am going to try charging two separate 36volt batteries ( on two separate electric motor scooter.) i would ideally like to do it simultaneously from a single solar panel. Does anyone know what type of panel to use and how to hook it up. I assume about an 80 watt panel. will consider two separate panels of say 40 watts each if easier to do. thanks

Commercial panels (called modules in the industry) typically come in 12 and 24 volt configurations. You will need multiple modules to do the job. There are small wattage modules available to not exceed the power you plan to use. Best check with the battery manufacturer to see their recommendations for charging then work back to the modules and charge controller you will need. Voltage and watts are fine to know but what is the size (amp hour rating of your batteries)? That is the first step you need to take.

The easiest way to do it is you can use what ever voltage panel you like as long as it falls in the range of the voltage regulator that you use to program the depth of charge and discharge. After all you do not want to over charge the batteries and cause a safety issue.

below is a link on batteries and charge controllers to get you started. We have used them for various "gorrilla applications"

The output voltage is the critical part.

look under charge controller and solar panel.

Re: charging batteries from a solar panel

Are these 36 volt batteries each a separate unit or are they made of say 3 x 12 volt batteries? Are they lead acid or some other chemistry? (This plays a huge role in selecting a charger for them.....)

Example.

Any battery of a voltage above 2.2 volts (lead acid) is comprised of many cells joined together to achieve the necessary voltage, but each cell is an individual and really it should be treated as such, but cannot as it is often a one piece unit.

Each cell has a slightly different capacity, takes a different length of time to charge and discharge. If you overcharge in the slightest, the weakest cell will gas, if you over discharge, the weakest cell will be reversed polarized and die first. Now you have to change the whole battery for just one defective cell.

Although the example is for lead acid, basically this applies to any battery (except the voltage noted of course, which will be different!), so never over charge or over discharge ANY battery at all!!!!

thanks- the batteries are 3 separate 12 volt batteries that power a 36 volts electric motor scooter ( they are sealed)- the easiest would be to charge them from my solar pane setup using and inverter ( they are normally charged this way (110), since I know I loose something from using inverter I was hoping to charge them directly

There are plenty of 12 volt Solar panels around, actually they tend to be 18 volts unloaded, but are intended to charge a nominal 12 volt lead acid(?) Battery, if that is what you have.

It sounds stupid, but probably 3 units, one for each 12 volt battery in a 36 volt setup (used twice for the other batteries) may actually be the cheapest option. 12 volts is almost a standard, 24 volts next, but 36 volts almost never!!!

You did not mention capacity so its hard to be exact here....

Something like 3 sockets and you could charge them in situ like this for example:-

Andy gave us some theoretical explanation from the Battery terminals view.

In his simple diagram 3 * 12V there are missing controllers.

If you have 120Vac / 36 Vdc charger that you want to exchange by solar units, try somehow to do measurements of charging current (in A dc) as a function of time. This is important for two reasons: the way of charging and ability of energy production by PV ( night is not good time to do this job!) so it could be the set of parameters that could send you to catalog for already manufactured PV + controller sets.

1.Battery charging requires that the correct charging voltage be applieded to the battery
Unless your batteries are exact electrical duplcates, (improbable), you can't just tie them together.

2. The output voltage of solar panels varies with the light. The rating you see on the panel is for peak sulight.

You are going to need some type of charge controller and solar panels rated in excess of the nominal voltage required..

You are right.

The 110 -120 Vac you may use also for other applications! At least lower the cost of electricity received from the grid/service.

i disagree with most of the postings here. but to go into all of the different whys and wherefores should be in another thread. bottom line, dc to dc is far more efficient.

just seems silly to me to use solar panels to inverter to battery charger to battery.

i use to use solar panels to batteries to inverter to power adapter to lap top. at least until i found out that the loss of efficiencies built up to where i was having to provide 150 watts from the panel, to run a 50 watt computer.

now, i use a Lind converter. dc to dc. 95% efficient. i am providing 55 watts to run my 50 watt computer. at $125 it was far cheaper than adding another 350 watts of panels at a cost of $1500. next i am going to see if i can get one for my new tv that i will have to buy within the next 8 months.

Start with the Clinton admin ignoring offers from gov. of Sudan to hand us the head of Bin Laden on numerous occasions prefering to attend to the dangerous evangelical right and to 'Ruby Ridge' or 'Waco' instead. Being a friend of Bill put many in the danger zone, strange.

How many years of ignoring the genocide in Iraq, Yugoslavia 1992-1995, Rwanda 1994, Guatemala 1968-1996, Burundi, Second Congo War 1998-2003, South Africa 1991-2001, Chetchnya 1994-1995 to name a few.

Re: charging batteries from a solar panel

I agree that DC to DC is the most efficient. Getting a controller that can match the voltage (plus one volt per set of 12 volts... I.e., 3 series wired 12 volt battery's equals 36 VDC means the controller must charge with 39 - 40 volts to get a reverse flow into the battery pack.). Some folks don't know that DC controllers USED to be called Pulse DC controllers, I.E., they output a pulsing square 'sine" wave such that the collapsing DC input in a heavy induction coil can be regulated to any voltage output value one selects within certain max variables. The senior variable in the equation is that solar cells can't always output their rated voltage, so the controller ups the voltage but the amps will drop to lower values, i.e., basic amps, volts, ohms algebra equation. Clouds, debris, dirty solar cells just output less than their max clean condition, clear day amps, but the Voltage the controller is set to output to the load (batteries in parallel with the load, if any) will remain steady; open the load and all the amps from the array route straight through the battery.).

When one powers up an inverter - there is a significant reduction in capacity for a given solar array. One has to pay a great deal of cash for a high efficiency inverter, last I looked. Worse, due to their losses one has to buy several square feet more solar array to make up for the efficiency losses incurred by inverters.

Re: charging batteries from a solar panel

06/19/2008 1:44 AM

I saw an interesting article in a UK Electronics magazine that I subscribe to recently, which may or may not be of interest to the readers of this blog.

It was an article how to build an accurate thermostat for turning a fridge into a wine cooler, or even a large trunk type freezer into a fridge.

The last point being interesting for here I find, as the large freezers do not spill or lose all their dearly bought cold air when opened, they are also much better insulated too generally speaking, so adding a thermostat to only allow them to only cool down to the level of a fridge, means very large savings in electricity over a normal fridge!!!

Ergo, you could run such a "fridge" from Solar power on a desert island for example.

I thought the idea was really good.....but have rated this as off topic because it really is.....

P = 75 W? and what is the voltage? 120 Vac/60Hz as in USA? or maybe 12 Vdc? or....

It seems to be absorption type, right? I am v. seriously interested in this solution.

Andy... how to get the article? May you scan it and send- maybe via e-mail attachment?

there is a new thread that has a link to a product that seems to be exactly what you asked for. below is the link. i am sorry for not making a clickable link. don't know how.

www.pulsetech.com

the part number is 735X200. it is a solar powered 2-36V battery maintainer. actually designed to keep the batteries charged and desulfated.

My interest in this thread is selfish. While I don't have an answer, you do have my support and I've joined this thread to see if anyone has some data an this topic. I have a growing fleet of 36 VDC powered adult trikes that I'd like to charge from solar cells directly - but there are no easy to understand means to convert off the shelf Photo Voltaic (sport) systems to direct current equivalent means - which appear to be the only cost effective way to do this upgrade to the use the sun's "free' energy to charge one's DC battery powered toys.

Good luck and I'll send you some data if I find it.
