Runtime Error

06/14/2008 8:44 PM

I have started getting several runtime errors. The error notice says:

Microsoft Visual C + + Runtime Library

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way, please contact the applications support team for more information.

The notice has an 'OK' button on it and, whether I click OK or 'red X out' it exits the programme which could be this site or any video site and, leaves me with the desktop. I then have to start the programme again.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this or, what I could do to put it right please?

Generally it is very difficult to find the reason to your problem based on a short description of the problem.

But, this could be the "Dll Hell". Software programs usually require specific versions of different Dll's. If you install a program including a older version of an Dll, other newer programs may start to malfunction.

Did your problems start after installation of a program ?

Hello Guest,

I do not think the XP sp3 update is the problem, but of course it could still be?

It has started to happen whenever I try to get onto this site. I also have the tool-bar from the site.

I will try a few days without the tool-bar, see if it helps

What browser are you running, and what version?

One thing I've noted about SP3 is it will return certain settings back to the default. For instance, if you've played with the sounds and have set up custom sounds for Windows actions, SP3 will turn them back to their default sounds.

If you've tweaked anything to make your PC work in a particular way, SP3 may have reversed this.

Hello vermin:

I note your post thanks. I have not seen any changes so far. This runtime error started around three days or so after the sp3 download. I would have thought this problem would have happened as soon as the download was installed?

OK. What browser are you using? If IE, upgrade to 7, then go to www.java.com and make sure your java is the latest... I would do that even if I didn't use IE.

I notice that the error message suggests you "contact the applications support team for more information".

Yet, you come here instead for advice. Please tell us what the application is that was terminated.

There is not enough information for a reply.

Re: Runtime Error

Hello eriew,

first I want to say sorry because I had to visit a friend and forgot to turn my computer off, so it may have appeared I was still on-line when I was not.

I have a bit more info.

I asked on this site because it is one of the main sites this error message happens.

About a second after the site launches the error pops up.

I have found if I click 'refresh' the error message will be minimised and, I can continue using the same screen as when the error came up. Is then any help?

I found by search Microsoft's site that the error Visual C + + is mentioned in detail. But When I was checking it out, I had a period of confusion, and could not continue.

Hello eriew,

by "please tell us what application it was that was terminated", I think I am right in saying my browser. It has happened when I come to this site almost every time, and also when I go to the BBC Home page site. It often happens when I visit sites to watch funny vids and see funny pics.

Another thing which happens everytime I try to close a a web page is it will not close. I try several times and always get the little window popping up to ask if I want to tell Microsoft. I usually say yes and then go on to press another little dialogue box which asks if I want to stop now? Or something similar. This has been a nuisance for a couple of years now. I have replaced my JAVA several months ago and also went back to check if it was up to date last night. It was.

I un-installed and installed a completely new version of ATI Catalyst control centre, for the Sapphire Graphics Card I have, about a year ago. None of these things I mention which are wrong, have made my machine worse. I did it to try to remedy the stuff like long closedown times or, where an application would not close.

I also have Belark Advisor which you may know tells me whether everything is working and up to date. It says I need 9 small updates:

However, though I have tried lots of times to download these one at a time (because Microsoft says I do not need any 'critical' updates) and so does not let me get any.

Can you tell me how to make Microsoft let me download these please? I actually have my computer set to auto download anything which needs updating but, according to Belark I still need another 8. One of the updates, I already have :

KB923092- Important

(details...)

but it will not run.

Any help I can give I will. Thanks to you and 'vermin' for your help so far.

I've heard of viruses that keep one from going to certain web sites, but I don't think that's the problem. I assume you've already scanned for viruses and malware.

Do you have registry fixing software - RegCure, 1 Click PC Fix, Registry Mechanic... If you don't it's possible that your registry is a total mess. This happens with normal use, stuff just gets mixed up in there.

Re: Runtime Error

Hello vermin,

thanks for the reply..............I scan my computer for malware, viruses etc once a day using: Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0, and, Ad-Aware 2007.

I have a reg' application but have not used it. (I forgot I had it actually) So, will run it to see what happens.

I want to download the NINE updates the Belark application says I need, then it can start working to help sort things out as well. Can you advice how I download from the Microsoft site individual updates please? Each time I try it says I have all critical updates but, from what I can see and according to Belark, I do not. I actually need 8 updates. The 9th one I have but it is not working.

If you can advise me on the downloads it may just solve the problem?

Take care and many thanks..............

Re: Runtime Error

First, is your virus scanner up-to-date (both definitions and software).

Second, I downloaded Belarc Advisor (is this correct?), and ran it on my system. It's kind of weird in that it dumps a bunch of crap on your screen! Anyway, it said I had two missing updates and two broken updates, then it sent me to some hole in the wall at Microsoft. Also, I didn't really agree with how critical these updates were - and my browser's been working just fine... However, I didn't like the way this was going, so I went directly to the source - www.microsoft.com.

It turned out that Microsoft wanted to install another "updater" before it would allow me to scan my computer for updates. With the new updater installed, it showed me six updates I could use, so I installed them.

Just a couple of things... Is your copy of Windows XP legal? Also, (if the registry thing doesn't help) try removing IE7 from your system. That will default back to IE6, and see if you get the same problems. If not, you can always download and reinstall IE7.

Hello vermin,

I am sending a note to you to let you know I no longer get the "Runtime error" panel pop up on my screen.

I deleted several applications and changes my Anti-virus and after that it didn't appear.

I always used 'paid-for' anti-virus and have a paid for version of AVAST! now. I liked the Kaspersky anti-virus I had as it was easy to use. But, it did not find the Trojan which infected me, so had no option but to change. The Trojan was in one of the kaspersky start menu logs and each time I restarted after running the anti-virus the Trojan was released. Just to let you know.............

Thank for your help, OK.

Take care.................

Well, that was rather sly and crafty of someone! Infect their machine when they run the anti-virus software!!!

Anyway, glad it's working. And thanks for keeping me informed.
