1.6mm 5052 H32 Aluminium VS 1.2 mm cold rolled steel half hard

06/17/2008 3:22 AM

I am stucked on the selection of either 1.6mm 5052 H32 Aluminium or 1.2mm cold rollled steel half hard in my project. My project involves using the standoff fastener to fit the PCB and sheet metal in a cetain height desired. I need to know which material perform better in term of its pushout/pullout value by comparing these two materials having different thickness. Can someone help to provide me the performance values between these two materials? What i know is varying sheet thickness will have effects on their performance values.

You would need to get this data from the supplier of the standoffs. PEM show these values in their catalogue for both aluminium and steel, but both are for 1.5mm material.

You have to be kidding.

You are wondering about the strength of the connection of the PCB and the standoff? The PCB isn't a load bearing component. I dare say the PCB will break long before the threads, screw or standoff would break regardless of if you use a steel or aluminum standoff or a steel or aluminum screw.

Generally which standoff to use boils down to what you can get ahold of.

Hi Travis,

I am concerned on the holding strength of standoff between PCB and Aluminium/steel sheet. I have 2 options whether to choose the aluminium or steel sheet.(1.6mm 5052 H32 Aluminium VS 1.2 mm cold rolled steel half hard). As I enquired before, which one perform better by comparing the pushout/pullout values when the standoff is seated between PCB and Aluminium/steel sheet.
