Best type of battery for motorsports

07/03/2008 3:01 PM

Hello everyone. I am hoping some of you could weigh in on what you feel is the best battery or possible solution to be used in a battery on a race car. The battery wouldn't be required to run an excessive amount of electronics but could be sitting in a hot environment. Maybe (~150F). It would have to be charged with a regular style of automobile alternator. So no fancy business in the on board charging department.

If money was of little concern and you could make one or just buy the best, what type would it/ could it be?

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Chris

I have been using an Optima gel cell battery in my asphalt late model stock car for several years and I am very happy with it. It has been exposed to extreme temperatures and has been through several crashes. It continues to perform well and has outlived 2 chassis.

Thanks for the replies! I am actually trying to figure out a solution that isn't so much "off the shelf." There must be something that can do an even better job than the Optimas. I'm even open to manufacturing it myself. Any ideas?

You beat me to it. Some of them can be mounted in any position also.

GA by the way.

So you guys think it is a good choice for even on go-carts? I've been chasing something for a long time but no success.

What size can you get them in and what is the best place?

You could saw one in half. Either less amps or 6 volts. Contact Optima for some ideas. As for sources I use the internet to research all the pertinent info, then try my local sources knowing what is what. If that doesn't work I order from the internet.

Optima might like to get into the Go-cart/Motorcycle market or even have a product. If not give them a nudge.
