Tweaking Windows XP Pro

07/16/2008 6:31 PM

How do you tweak or hack the Microsoft Windows XP Pro flavor of Windows Explorer to ALWAYS show the "Detailed View" of files when you open folders instead of icons? ....thus making it the default behavior.......... without jumping back and forth to the drop down menu or a using some hot key trick?
...........................and oh yeh............without administrative rights?

Hi Markar,

This is one I've wanted to know for some time and since you asked the question, I decided it was time to find the answer. For a change my half hour lunch break was not wasted surfing through useless trash on t'interweb.

This is how to do it:

1. Open Windows Explorer and click on My Computer in the left hand pane

2. Set up the view to how you want every folder to look

3. Select Tools->Folder Options from the menu bar

4. Select the View tab

5. Click Apply to All Folders

and voila the job is done. Details upon details to your hearts content

regards

Al

GA. Thanks, I've been wondering about that for a while too, but was too lazy to look into it.

Hello markar:,

a slightly easier way to alter 'views' is:

Click any saved folder or go to 'My Folders', click 'Views' then 'Details'

I also find it helpful to use windows "Classic" folders to help unclutter the view. Select "Use windows classic folders" under the General Tab of Tools/Folder Option.
