Practice vs Perform

07/18/2008 1:25 AM

Let us laugh: One of my friend asked me why I stored my wife's cell number as BH. I said Better Half, I further said, "You know why only "better"? because there is a scope for improvement (to look/ try around for "The Best"). The highest paid or the Rich professionals "Doctors and Lawyers" for years only practice whereas their counter parts like engineers, scientists, etc have to perform to make their living.

It's a little like the 'crazy english' we all use:

"I'll do my best ..." -- does this imply there are other times when we don't?

'Frankly speaking ..." or "To tell you the truth ..." -- does this imply that when we DON'T use those words to what we say, we are telling 'less than' the truth?

[other examples???]

You mention Doctors ... while I have some as very good friends, my general 'feeling' about the profession is that they DO just 'practice', and at our expense. If another service provider (plumber, electrician, TV repair-man) took that approach (hmmm, I 'think' this is the problem, so let's try 'this' and see if it works), we would be pretty upset.

Crazy english ... maybe there are other examples in other languages, but our 'terms' and phrases often DO ring true ... I guess we need to be careful of what we say

Let us 'cut them a bit of slack'; perhaps it is the # of variables that makes as much "art" as science?

May because the term 'best' ( in english, anyway) implies a multiple wives?

(you aren't, are you??)

Ah, yes, and when was the FIRST time (never mind the "last" time) you ever heard of a doctor or a lawyer offering a warranty on their work?!?

Marvelous answer:

A mechanic was removing the cylinder heads from the motor of a car when he spotted the famous heart surgeon in his shop, who was standing off to the side, waiting for the service manager to come to take a look at his car.

The mechanic shouted across the garage, "Hello Doctor! Please come over here for a minute."

The famous surgeon, a bit surprised, walked to the mechanic.

The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked argumentatively, "So doctor, look at this. I also open hearts, take valves out, grind'em, put in new parts, and when I finish this will work as a new one. So how come you get the big money, when you and me is doing basically same work?"

The doctor leaned over and whispered to the mechanic.

He said: "Try to do it when the engine is running

I like that ... you may think from my former post here that I don't respect doctors (let's leave lawyers out of the mix ). In fact, I do respect them very much. What I lose faith in is the 'business' of medicine. The differences are clear when one has a chance to actually spend time with a committed physician, as opposed to those whose lives and business are dictated by their 'health-care-organization-employer'. I guess another part of my observations come from a few of my personal friends, also physicians, so tell me the same thing about the state of the medical profession. In most cases, my heart goes out (sounds like a pun, following your 'joke') to those in the medical profession, but in some cases, either as a dictate, or maybe because some chose the 'wrong profession', they seem to have lost their 'personal touch'.

Take care ...
