Alternator construction

I wanted to know if there is a threshold, on an automotive alternator, as to the voltage input needed as excitation on the rotor windings in order to gain the required magnetic flux for voltage inducement for output through the stator?

Hi Maxozone,

I am assuming that you are asking about a 12VDC system since you did not specify. The excitation circuit has either the charge light or a resister in series with the battery voltage. Some installations have both (the resister supplying the current in the event that the charge lamp opens/burns out). If it has both in will be a series/parallel configuration. The required voltage at the regulator for the excitation circuit is 1.3 to 2.5 volts and requires a potential current flow of 2 to 4 amps.
