Global Warming !!

07/24/2008 12:11 AM

With the development of Alternative Energy sources Wind Energy is one of the Options and off let thousand of Megawatts of Electricity is being produced by these wind mills across the world.

What I feel that, if this much power is drawn from the wind from all over the world. Could this impact the wind flows across the glob and affect the rain pattern ? Thus affecting the cooling / heating of the earth ?

This year , we at Mumbai ( Bombay - India ) have scanty rain till today ( 24 - 7 - 2008 ) and have read that there floods in many parts of the world where that was not the case earlier ?

2 years back on 26-7-2006 we had unprecedented rain of 40 " in 8 to 10 Hrs which had created havoc !! And this year there is no rain.

What is your opinion ?

Generating power from wind energy does not take anything out of the wind. The process does not extract power out of the wind instead only the kinetic energy is used and this leaves the winds property intact.

!!! Of course it extracts energy from the wind! <slaps furry head with paw> Where else is it getting it from?

The amount is trivial compared with the total energy carried in the air mass...anyway trees also absorb this energy.

The majority of wind is at higher levels. If we interferred with the jet streams then maybe I'd be worried.

So the green answer is cut all the trees to help harness more wind.

No, raise the turbines higher. The higher the better (see previous posts and articles on tethered kit and floating wind turbines). There is of course a realistic and practical height limit to wind turbine towers.

Did someone mention mounting wind turbines on top of skyscrapers.

much more energy to be exploited through ocean currents than wind---more dynamic mass, and it is 24/7--if the wind doesn't blow---than what? no batteries can capture wind power--totally upsets power grids--nuclear is the best alternative, constant-on, green, source we have available, until we can imagine ourselves into some real innovative , new technologies---where is Tesla , when we need him?
