Hi

I would advise you to go to the site of ESRI and download the free Arc Explorer program and some data.

You can play around with available data and may realize the possibilities of applying GIS in your field of expertise.

I didn't have a problem..

Click on Download.

Now you have several options.

Stable, Testing, Next Stable You cannot find the "Stable" version from the coloured listing?

What OS do you want to run it under?

Pre-compiled Binaries

GNU/Linux:
Generic
DebianFedora Core
OpenSUSE
Ubuntu

MacOSX

MS Windows (Cygwin)

Source code (to build/modify it yourself)

grass-6.2.3.tar.gz (grass-6.2.3.md5sum)

The Manuals

Tutorial (HTML)
User manual pages (HTML)
Programmer's Manual

Compiling source code

I'm sorry we cannot do the project for you, but the idea of a project is to *learn*

The last part seems that you don't really understand GIS, read thru the manuals, gain a understanding of this subject...

If I understand your question, here's a possibility:

In GIS you create a map of the campus. Within each building, you create a "hot link" that activates a pop-up menu when the building image is selected (clicked on). Within each menu you give several options, such as available floor space and related physical data, building use, types of materials present (such as potential fire/chemical release hazards), utilities provided (HVAC capacities, etc.), and whatever else seems useful. That way, there is an electronic "map" complete with a linked database about each of the features.

Is this the kind of application you had in mind? If so, please report back with progress and conclusions reached!

Hi,

yes. I am so happy to note that, what you said is correct. I like to do an electronic map for my college as project work. In which, each block is mentioned via, it's floor area, no. of seats avaliability in each lecturer hall, furniture details, etc..and all those facilities. But, i don't know how to carry all this in GIS... Now only i am going through the manual of arcgis software. But i really think it is difficult.. u people plz help me how to create map in that software or in any other software, and how to enter data and how to bring in output format.? if possible with small example.

sir, Do you have any experience in GIS project..?

Yes, I have experience, but not recent - >12 years ago actually. What I worked on is just the kind of map I described. We turned each building on the map into a "hot link" so when you clicked on it with a cursor, you got a pop-up menu of things to choose from, the kinds of things you want to include, for example (floor space, seating capacities, etc.) and things emergency responders would need to know (fire hoses/extinguishers, labs and chemical storage areas, etc.) so you could have all the details at hand electronically. I could not give an example without having the software, which I no longer do have, but that's a good description. It's not all that hard to do, though, once you understand ArcView. It's just database creation and population with relevant information.

wow.. 12 years ago..? nice to hear.. hmmm now only i am starting this although you have completed a decade ago. i got clear over view of our college from google earth and captured those images in my datas. will it be useful in any way of my project..? and i had calculated different RL's, contouring, entire plan view of our college in auto cad.. will it be also useful any where of my project..? and now only i started going through the mannual of gis-of various authour text books too.. And one more doubt, How to create map in gis software? either we can include(import) autocad map/ we have to draw in the software data base..? And how did yoy match "hot links-pop up's) for each item..? Is their any procedure to do like that..?

according to me, doing anything new in our circullam is difficult. But with people like you-- are great in helping me to acheive some thing in life. So, nothing is impossibe.

Since our "map" was imported into ArcView as old aerial photos, I think you should be able to use the GoogleEarth image. We created shape polygons of each building and other feature we needed to include, which sounds a lot like your AutoCad overlay. You'll have to link the shapes to the images, then create an Access database of the info to be used in the pop-up menus. It was not difficult to create ArcInfo hotlinks to connect images, menus, and data, but I do not recall the specific details; that you'll have to learn by reading, I fear. I'd have to re-learn it to explain it, and I don't have that system available here. The more you get into it, the easier I think you'll see it is. Please don't hesitate to contact me (Private Message from this site is OK) for any guidance I might be able to provide, just remember it will only be as good as my memory!

Go to any of my posts, and left-click on my "name". That will take you to my biography page, and in the upper right corner will be an envelope icon and "Send EnviroMan a message". Click on that, and you can send me a PM (private message) which is essentially an email. ArcView and ArcInfo are not difficult to learn, they were designed to be easy to use, I think. Just learn their conventions, or rules, and you should do fine.
