Probably the type of voltage--VFD is AC--Chopped and loaded on a DC buss and the output is a DC sine wave of varying frequency.

VSD is DC. AC chopped and loaded on a DC buss and the output is DC. We have one large DC motor with a VSD and it is old(WWII stuff).

I may be wrong, so---Just search it on the web.

The term VSD means Variable Speed Drive and is more generic, it can be anything that varies the speed, AC, DC or even mechanical tapered pulleys.

VFD, ofr Variable Frequency Drive, is more specific in that the term Frequency is only applicable to AC motors.
