Carbon Steel; MATERIAL: SA 517 GR E

10/15/2008 7:57 AM

I am looking for carbon steel sheets in above captioned grade. The quantity i need is :

  1. 10 Thk X Width 3050 X 7140mm Long – Qty: 187 Nos.
  2. 10 Thk X Width 3050 X 7760mm Long – Qty: 7 Nos.
  3. 10 Thk X Width 3000 X 6000mm Long – Qty: 13 Nos.
  4. 8 Thk X Width 3000 X 7000mm Long – Qty: 62 Nos.

While searching for the above material , I got information that SA517 GR E, is an old grade and is hence difficult to find. Moreover the quantityis small for the sizes required.

I am looking to know if this info is correct , as well as to know any equivalent grade that is easly available.

Thanks

The material ASME SA516 is an "Alloy Steel, High-Strength, Quenched and Tempered". We use this material, especially Grade P in fabrication of LPG tanks' mobile trucks. We faced a lot of problems to find that material, where the suppliers need you to buy a big quantity of that plates.

Sorry, I mean ASME SA517 not SA516.

517 is pretty available in the US. Many times it is dual certfied with SA514. SA 517 is Carbon alloy that is Q&T. Even service centers like ALRO Steel (Regional svc) in the US have it. A 516 is a PVQ carbon steel and not the same as SA 514/517 A trade name similiar to a 514/517 is T1. Start here, major US service centers that have international locations should have this too Castle Metals, Ryerson, EMJ (Earle M. Jorgensen) or they can get you closer to a source near home. We normally use ASTM A 517 Grade F for truck mounted pressure vessels. A517 very high tensile strnght and would enable you to use thinner plates.
