Watch Magnetization

10/10/2006 10:01 AM

I work at Tourneau watch company and recently had a customer inquiry about the possibility of magnetic field generation by the human body. He had a new Rolex Cellini and repeatedly experienced time piece slow down and eventual stopping over 3 days, in spite of being certain to fully wide this manual wind watch every 4 hours. Rolex examined this Cellini twice and it came back no trouble found.

If the chemistry of any part of the human body was to align in such a way as to have a positive net magnetic field, that part of the body would no longer be human tissue.

Granted, the body is full of water which has a strong dipole moment, but the very nature of that bond makes a positive net magnetic field unlikely.

What is the band made of? Where does this individual work (environmental factors)?

This question made me recall a story I heard, going something like this: all magnetizable metal objects in the US have got a South Pole at the top and a North Pole at the bottom. Apparently this is due to the angle towards Earth's magnetic North Pole that lies below the horizontal. Is this an urban legend or is there some truth in it?

Urban legend. Like water flowing in the opposite direction down a drain in the northen hemisphere, compared to the southern.

the guy lies, trust Rolex. Their watches are immune to magnets unless you place them in a huge field that slows then eddy currents

Alright, let's assume that the guy doesn't need his medication adjusted and that he's also not lying. Also, we can assume that Rolex is competent and that in fact the watch is fine. We all assume that someone would know how to wind a watch, right? But perhaps this is not the case or there is a trick to it and he has not read the instructions because he also assumes he knows how.

Environmental. I have a Seiko that gained 15 minutes every time I stood within 2 meters of a powerful spot welder.

I have a Rolex watch that tells me the exact time twice a day! The gentlemen who pointed out there are special instructions in the manual for winding a Rolex watch is a genius. Don't assume you know everything about a new product without reading the manual. There is no black magic, there is an answer for everything.

It reminds me of a story where at a Rolex distributor convention, many distributors complained about the watch accuracy. At the closing speech the factory rep said:

"and whoever is looking for a precise timepiece should buy a quartz watch. Rolex is being bought for entirely different reasons".

BTW: is your friend a robot by any chance? or maybe he has those Chinese $9.99 Rolex?
