WATER RING VACUUM PUMP HOW IT WORKS?

10/21/2008 8:36 AM

I WANT TO KNOW HOW THE WATER RING VACUU PUMP WORKS? THE WATER IS FOR THE SEALING OF THE VACUUM THEN CAN WE INCREASE OR REDUCE THE VAACUUM BY INCREASING OR REDUSING THE FLOW OF WATER? WHAT THE QUALITY OF THE WATER SHOULD BE?

THE QUALITY OF WATER ISNT VERY IMPORTANT ABOUT THE VACUUM ,BUT ITS İMPORTANT FOR THE MAINTENANCE OF PUMP,ALSO MORE PURE WATER PROVIDES MORE TIME BETWEEN THE PERIOD OF MAINTENANCE.BUT THE AMOUT OF WATER PER MINUTE AND SPEED OF WATER IS IMPORTANT,WHEN IT INCREASES THE VACUUM INCREASES AND THE TEMPERATURE OF WATER IS IMPORTANT.AND ANOTHER ONE THE BLADES MUSTNT BE DAMEGED,WHEN ITS FORM IS DAMAGED VACUUM DECREASES

The water ring vacuum pump works somewhat like a blower, moving air from a low pressure to a higher pressure state. The water in the pump acts as a seal between the high pressure and low pressure sides to prevent air from leaking around the clearences of the impeller blades.

Flow of water whould be within Manufacturer recommendations. More water, to a point, with increase the possible pressure ratio but reduces the potential flow rate.

Quality of water should be clean enough to avoid damage to the pump.

I prefer the term "Liquid" ring, as water is not always the sealing liquid. They are usually used to pump wet products. (Gas containing condensibles).

Basically the impeller is mounted eccentric to the casing. If the casing is partially filled with water and the impeller rotated, the water forms a "ring" due to centrifugal force. Because the liquid ring thus formed is eccentric to the impeller, the gas and the excess liquid is forced out from between the blades through the discharge ports by a piston like action.

Adding excess sealing liquid will not increase vacuum assuming that you have enough liquid to continuously form the sealing ring in the first place. When using water as the sealing (operating) liquid cavitation can be one of your worst enemies.

There are many good sites describing the working principle much better than I can and with good illustrations. Some suppliers are Siemens, Sihi, Nash amongst many others.

This site gives a simple animation of the process.

Great illustration.

There are two good ways to wreck a liquid ring pump. Too much liquid, and too little liquid. Don't mess with the flow of water, keep it within the manufacturers recommedations.
