conversion of a 200 amp Lincoln welder

10/27/2008 11:34 PM

I recently purchased a very good used 200 amp Lincoln Pipeliner welder.

I am told that I can easily purchase a gen set head that will bolt right up to this 4 cylinder gas engine and convert it over to a generator.

What I am having a hard time finding out, is, what the horse power of this older model 4 cylinder motor is?

Do any of you welders out there know what horse power motor it takes to run a 200 amp dc lincoln arc welder?

Thanks

Donald

The current 200G (gas) is 40 hp and the 220D (diesel) is 26hp. The welding output, though is about 7000 watts (200A, 35 V) which is about 10 hp, so the engines are not working very hard, apparently.

The 7kVA electrical rating is probably a continuous rating.

IC engines are rated at intermittent service and the power is then adjusted to idealised conditions, I think 60F and standard atmosphere at sea level.

This can easily mean that 7kVA corresponds to a motor power requirement of well over double. Capacity factors then add even more to the IC motor kW required.

The 26HP diesel would seem to be about right.

Sorry, I'm a bit rusty on the details and safety factors used here so the above is only indicative.

Is the engine it 3 cylinder, 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder ? Like the miller welders some of the old Lincolns were over powered. Some had a small engine with a gear to increase the torque output. Just a little more info and we can pin point it for you.

If it is a SA-200 Pipeliner from the 1970's-80s then it has a 4 cylinder Continental engine with an updraft carb. I have owned several of these in the past and still do have a 1984 model. If you are going to do away with the D.C. welding generator part I would be interested in purchasing it from you. I think the old Continental engines were around 22 HP. If you go to Lincolns' web site ( http://www.lincolnelectric.com/)they have all of the old manuals for these machines for free, I downloaded one for mine a couple of weeks ago.
