Ice in July, Global Warming, Climate Change, Ships stuck in Ice in July.

What is going on with Artic ice? Last winter Ice started to reform at record rates (580,000 sq miles in ten days). Here is a little info about 'Ice in July'. 7/30/08

From the Barents Observer:
http://www.barentsobserver.com/?cat=16149&id=4498513
New data from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute shows that there is more ice than normal in the Arctic waters north of the Svalbard archipelago.

In most years, there are open waters in the area north of the archipelago in July month. Studies from this year however show that the area is covered by ice, the Meteorological Institute writes in a press release.

In mid-July, the research vessel Lance and the Swedish ship MV Stockholm got stuck in ice in the area and needed help from the Norwegian Coast Guard to get loose.

The ice findings from the area spurred surprise among the researchers, many of whom expect the very North Pole to be ice-free by September this year.

Maybe Obama can comment on the ice from the "three" multi million dollar homes he is renting on Oahu. The man of the people is living it up while people are losing their jobs, houses, cars, 401K's etc....

Well, I don't read Norwegian so the source material isn't particularly convincing. And the comment about Obama, so what? This is an engineering forum, not a political one. Why don't you head over to Red State, Free Republic, Daily Kos, etc.

I think it is a natural occurrence. It may mean that the magma flow or chamber that was responsible for the ice free situation has changed in temperature or has moved to another location where temperatures will rise.

One should only look at a model of earth beneath the thin crust to realize that drastic changes in temperatures at the surface must occur over time because of the ever changing currents. It is also known that the temperatures of magma can differ as a result of the composition.

I dont think Obama is powerful enough to prevent the changes.

I personally found it interesting that details of an ice shelf breaking off were widely reported and used in some pseudo scientific movies for profit, however the detail that there was a volcano underneath that ice floe was scarcely mentioned.

I am more comfortable in a forum that respects the difference between science and pseudo science.

'Political science' really is a valid subject however. Perhaps the authors could construct a 'bin' for this category where we could properly refer these threads? :-)

Remember the hole in the ozone layer? Huge, threatening, et cetera? Right over Mount Erebus in Antarctica, an active volcano.

Never let mere facts interfere with political expedience.

Climate change is a valid technical discussion question, but only if we stick to verifiable, documented facts. "Shots" at political figures, whether on the left or right, are best left to other forums.

Your peers are right, Senatorferrell. Stick to the science and save the politics for other places on the Web. There are plenty of 'em.
