Convert 8mm and Super 8mm Cellulose to Digital

12/13/2008 8:44 PM

Greetings, friends and associates.

I have a large number of 8mm and Super 8mm home movies. I need to capture the analog film into Digital format, and possibly, enhance the image while we are about it.

Where do I begin to look for information about this?

I am a bit desperate about this. My Brother-In-Law bit off more than he can chew and agreed to do the job for $800.00, up front. Now, for most home movies on 8mm & Super 8mm, projecting the image and capturing it to a digital, that is, Sony or Cannon Video Cameras, for way under $1,000.00, is okay. However, these customers are a bit more savvy than the average user. There is a definite loss of fidelity between the analog image and the digital image.

I am open to any suggestions including prices for equipment above $1,000.00usd.

I am interested in the mid to high end of image processing, both in equipment and in software.

So, what do you say? Let's do some brain storming, all of you, my good friends, and I and see if we can't crack this walnut. How about it?

I thank you all, in advance, for your wise and prompt responses.

/Ari (Orpheuse)

Don't know if this helps, but as best as I can remember the set up looked something like the above.

Unless the film is shown backwards, the digital version will be!

The unit I have reflects the film via a mirror to get it the right way round.....If anyone needs better infos I will haven to go and find it in the cellar and photgraph it for you.....

Hi, JD,

No, your method in #2 is impossible. yoiu may not do the job. just have an imagine.

At first, there is sync problem. vedio has 25 frams /s and movies has 24 frames/s. if you do accord to the picture you drawn, there will be a blink line slowly move in you vedio.

ehe special equipment has to balance this problem by interpolate method. descripted by math, is increase a frame every second, this will cause another problem on audio, so at blank place you have delay some time. its not an easy job.

besides, the quality of picture is worst.

so the best bet is ask special company for help, they use fly spot scan way to do it to get more good quality. not expensive.

I agree there may be problems, I also agree with you and vermin that they should be done professionally, but when I had mine done, about 25yrs ago, there was profit in converting from celluloid film to tape. Things may well have moved on since then, I don't know perhaps things have improved?

JD has given you some brilliant advice. That's the easy part; now comes the hard part. Improving the quality of the image. In your previous posting on HD-DVD & BluRay someone adviced you where to get hold of affordable digital enhancement software. Did you download or purchase it? If you have, once you have done the video capture, you can use this software to improve your image. It won't be as good as an original high definition video, but it will definitely be better that your average analog to digital conversion. You can also download some free format conversion software at the following website: http://www.erightsoft.com/

I'm pretty sure there are a lot of pros out there that offer this service, and can do it competently and safely. They are your precious memories, after all. Find a pro send 'em a reel and see how they do.

Good Luck

Hi Orpheuse,

A couple of bits that may be useful. I downloaded a trial version of http://www.dvdcopyrip.com/extra-video-effect-editor.html last week primarily as I was looking for something to rotate video from my digital camera - You tend to forget that if you video in "portrait orientation" you get a cricked neck watching the replay. This function worked OK and I noticed it also has some video enhancement features and is not expensive. I learnt about it from this website, http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/ which has been useful in provding the odd useful application.

Good luck and have a safe Christmas

Googling 'film to DVD' finds lots of companies offering conversion services starting at around $20/film. there's also an article discussing the equipment & problems on eBay here.

About 10 or 12 years ago I needed/wanted to transfer about 10 8mm/Super8 50' reels to VHS (the going technology at the time).

After researching this one time thing, I decided it would be more prudent just to let someone else do it.

To make a long story short one of the local 1-Hour photo places in suburban Atlanta did the job quite nicely at a reasonable price.
