Other Uses for Calcium Chloride Desiccant Bags?

12/17/2008 10:01 AM

At the company where I work we receive machined parts with desiccant bags included in the packaging. The bulk of the desiccant is calcium chloride, but we also receive clay and silica gel dessicant packs as well. We already recycle all of the cardboard and plastic waste, but are having a hard time coming up with an alternative to sending 5 metric tons of desiccant bags per month to the land fill. The bags would be free for the taking if someone had a use for them. The dessicant bags vary from 15g to 600g, with the bulk of the bags in the 450g range. Our daily accrual of dessicant is ~850 lbs/day depending on production schedule. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I should state, that the bags are coming from overseas, and we've already contacted the part supplier and desiccant maker about alternatives, and not gotten any useful response. Also, we are not allowed to incinerate at our facility, so that is also not an option that some of our sister plants use. Thanks for any help.

tnrcboatracer,

Where is your company located?

What is the climate? Specifically, does it ever snow/sleet?

Have you thought about using the CaCl for ice/snow melt for application on roadway and pavement surfaces around your facility?

If you do not need to de-ice the surfaces around your facility, perhaps you could get the local municipality to take it off your hands...

Thanks for the reply, we are located in central Tennessee. We had considered that option, but there's not much snow here. We would love to give it to someone to use as a snow melter. Haven't found anyone that is interested as of yet.

I would think that you could contact any of the larger cities in the northern states and agree that if they pay the freight, you'd fill a RR car or a semi-box for them. CaCl2 is more expensive and less harmful to the environment than is salt. Failing that, run an ad in the local (regional) newspaper for people with wet basements, wet closets, offices that store electronics, server rooms, and so forth. Free for the taking. Alternatively, we'd be happy to send you some of our snow!

With that kind of volume, I'd think it would be economical to send the bags back to the parts supplier for re-use. Obviously some re-drying would be involved, but it sounds like that would be cheaper than the packaging cost of new desiccant, which also has to be dried (doesen't it?).

Sell 'em to shooters for long-term ammo storage, maybe?

Hello tnrcboatracer,

There is another desiccant type product in bag form that has the capacity to absorb 1000x more moisture than silica gel (H2O Moisture Absorbing Packets). They are used by a number of mining giants and their machined parts suppliers. If your overseas supplier switched over, there would be far less quantities needed and being very lightweight they could be shipped back and reused numerous times.

OUr core business is automotive, and I don't see us getting into reselling it directly. Maybe I need to set up a side business.

We are open to changing the dessicant, but it must be reasonably priced in Japan. We index everything to cost per unit (production part), so a more efficient, but slightly higher cost material would be acceptable if the overall CPU doesn't go up. Please give me a hint on this other material you referenced; supplier, chemical name, trade name. Something so I can research it.

Thanks for the feedback.

Supplier: H2O Control Products Inc.

Chemical name: Cross-linked Polyacrylamide

Trade Name: H2O Moisture Absorbing Packets

Prices are not cheap, but the product has not been marketed for bulk purchase as of yet.

Thanks for the information, I'll check it out.

Per the MSDS sheet, the current desiccant material (Nisso Dry CZ) is >70% Calcium Chloride Anhydride, <10% Polyacrylamide, and <20% Sepiolite.

Take a pallet load to a local car show and let the owners have them for free for storing their cars. Enjoy the show for your efforts.

I think with the release of new EU reach norms you can better check up with concern authorities weather these types of desiccants are allowed for land filling or not. Better contact some recycling companies who can help you to save environment. Regards beebo

Depending on if the calcium chloride pellets are pure and if they are picking up any hazardous materials during the absorption process, you might try to find a way to pop the bags quickly and get the pellets out for containerizing them for sidewalk or road salt. You could also offer them free or for a small fee to a salt seller, determining the price before or after getting them out of the packaging. I'm sure you're not the only one that has to deal with these little packets so it could be lucrative to ask around what others are doing with theirs.

This won't work the same way for silica gel although there is a chance someone may reclame it, attempt to regenerate it, and use it for some sort of throw-away adsorption application.

Calcium Chloride is a good product for ice melting. Maybe a better solution to this would be sending those bags to local transportation office. Moreover, it's also a good drier for chemical and medical use. In this case, you may consider sending samples first to some industries or hospitals, something like that, and let them test the purity or analyze the contents of it so that they will know if your Calcium Chloride is suitable or not. I heard that 74% flake calcium chloride can be used in ice and snow melting, but with such a large amount, it seems better to be used in chemical industry.
