Looking for Tear and Puncture-Resistant Bags

01/05/2009 12:22 PM

Hey folks.

I am in search of some tear, puncture resistant bags / sheathing. Needs to be inexpensive. A cut to length tube would be wonderful. 10'' (20" diameter) would be good. I am shipping a rug (rolled) overseas and can not find the 'right' product.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

How about cardboard sonotube from big box hardware store?

Alt. could be poly film from same box store, they sell rolls in 6mil, 10mil, pretty tough stuff; but it is a sheet. And once wrapped handling would be hard as it is slippery.

Try a company called ULINE @ 1-800-295-5510 or www.uline.com. They supply the kinds of bags (tubing) you are looking for in various thicknesses and diameters (from 4" - 96"; 2" - 48" flat) in rolls. Cut to length and heat seal. They also supply inexpensive sealers with and without cutters.

Ya Beat me to it!! I was going to make the same recommendation!! They have all sorts of things for shipping. If nothing else, their catalog will spark your imagination for ways to ship things. I believe they once even had body bags... How long is the rug?

Thank you both. Yes we have a U-line account. They do not make tubes large enough for us and I currently am using the 6mil poly tube they offer.

Thanks for all the help. I think what I have in place is the most practical.

A fiberglass reinforced poly tarp? Wrap with a cheap rug wrapped in heavy brown paper? Poly duct material?

Hi Charley

Could you not use some fly screen mesh. We have some here that is near indestructable and made of termite resistant steel mesh. With a couple of layers you should be on the safe side. It does not weigh much and you should be able to get the product in Texas were you have termites too, I suppose. Good luck, Ky.

Hello TexasCharley:

You may find this helpful. It explains how to fold and ship. There is an email and phone # which may also help.

Remember to put a 'NO HOOKS' and HANDLE WITH CARE SIGN on the parcel.

If it was really special pack it in a Thick blankets or heavy dust-sheet and thick plastic bag but do not tape. As They may want to check it at customs?

Pack in a 5-layer corrugated box making sure you tape the seams and corners. Cut the box down to make a tight fit for your rug. I used to send clothes like this, to the States from England. They all arrived with no problem.

Take care and have a great new year.................

Wow. Pretty cool. Unfortunately our rugs do not lend themselves to folding.
