Sulfur Degassing

02/18/2009 10:20 AM

What is considered the best technology for degassing sulfur in the refinery sulfur pit. Due to ever increasing environmental constraint about sulfur release into the atmosphere, many refiners are having to curb the SOx emmisions. Perhaps different approach applies to revamp as apposed to a new facility where there will be less constraints. I am looking at options available that is most economic, but efficient and ease of operation as the selection criteria. Recently many inquiries are coming to my company pertaining to sulfur degassing projects. Reduction of sulfur to less than 30 to 40 ppm to be considered. Any suggestions or websites that are helpful?

This is outside of my field, but the first thing that comes to my mind is to pass the vapors through a water spray air scrubber. You'll get sulfuric and sulfurous acids, which are marketable if sufficiently pure and not too far from the customer to transport economically.

www.sulfree.com

should take care of all your problems and allow you to produce saleable elemental sulfur or sulfuric acid (Currently demanding high prices).

tell Gary that Mike sent you.

seriously, you should look into this technology.

I once looked into adsorbing the SO2 using shredded waste newspaper.

SO2 was then extracted as a concentrated stream using higher temp exhaust to desorb it.

This concentrated stream could then be turned into sulfurous or sulphuric acid.

The process showed quite a bit of promise.

Obama Administration will use EPA to further regulate "greenhouse gases". But because of the "Cap and Trade" recommendations there will actually be no reduction in gases just a shuffling around of dollars.

Extortion and Politics. Where is the demand that China reduce it's emissions? It build coal fired power plants every week and use no emissions controls and whatever coal they dig up to burn, no matter the sulfur or mercury content.

Until the now biggest user of coal (China) does something about their emissions, there will be no change.
