Liquid nitriding on EN24 material

03/07/2009 12:30 AM

We have selected EN24 material as lead screws for our boring machine. We want to liquid nitriding on them to get surface hardness around 50 HRC up to the surface depth of 0.5 mm. Is the selection proper? If not, pl.suggest suitable alternative.

We used to mfr gears and pinons for gear box from 16MnCr5 DIN standard steel.Surface Hardeness of 56 HRC was achieved by case hardening. You may try this material it is easliy available in the market.

This is probably a little off subject but, you don't say what type of lead screws You have. Are they acme thread? evidently You are having a ware problem. You might consider using Ball screws, plus You can probably get these hardened if need be.

Just some thoughts.

Yes, our lead screws are ACME thread which runs in combination with SAE 65 grade Bronze nuts. Due to wear, we want to replace them with suitable MOC & hardness, without changing the design ACME thread.
