I always love it when years at work are used to measure experience. Such a reliable indicator. I can see how doing the same calculation 5000 times is much more meaningful than just 2000 times.

Help wanted: Tetris player with 5+ years experience, skilled in fighting depression (from doing tedious engineering calculations over and over at the same HVAC job for 5 years).

1. There actually seems to exist little correlation between 'time served' (zero excluded of course) and the kind of experience that translates into competence. With more time served, it is just as likely that one is perpetuating the same (poor? bearly adequate? good? excellent?) practices.

2. Other skills may or may not develop over time, like PR (good or bad, depending on character and work environment), tetris (bad), holism (good), management (good) etc. But again it can go either way and the correlation is poor.

3. Habits will develop with time (good correlation here), which is not always a good thing.

The kind of experience that matters? That will surface surely enough in the technical interview, if the interviewer knows how to ask (and answer!) the right questions...

Without a meaningful interview, you'll get your share of tetris players. You'll certainly miss out on some of the real talent by screening using 'time served' or other irrelevant criteria.

A better ad(?): 1) Emploee wanted + 2) Technical interviewer to screen candidates with serious expertise in the field wanted

No offence meant, Jake. I mean well.

And you don't think there'd be an interview involved? Wow, we do get some dumb guests.

Yes, an interview by the same guy who asks for 5+ years in HVAC, because he's clueless to otherwise screen the candidates... Are you an engineer Chris Leonard? Do you know what doing the work means?

Who do you pretend to be? The trusted side-kick?

Oh, right, the 'host' (as opposed to 'guest')!

Right, mark me off-topic. Gang up.

Idiot.
