Bank of Tubular Heaters Shuts Down

I recently occured with a problem in tubular heater, where in my bank of 50 heaters when idle show meggar( insulation) at infinity, but when the heater bank is switched on after 8 - 10 mins the entire bank shuts down, again when the meggar ( insulation) is checked it shows at infinity.

Does any one know why does this problem arise, as i have come across this problem for the first time in my life.

I have come across this problem many times n past. I would like to share with you ...

This is the behaviour of insulation material on the verge of getting faulty. Very principle that resistance of insulating material decreases with rise in temperature.... the cumulative local heating effect in the hot spot at weaked portion of the insulation goes on reducing the dielectric value at localised weaked portion... ultimately after few cycles, permanantly damaging the insulation.

In your case, all the 50 heater elements are not faulty.

You may locate the faulty tubular heating element by switching ON the heating elements in groups... say 10 at a time, .... you shall immediately locate the group of 10 elements wherein one heating element is on the verge of dyeing.

Like wise, you shall locate the faulty element.

Divide and conquer has been and is a great strategy for things like this. Once in a blue moon (rarely) there will be a situation where the fault current from a large number of units is sufficient to cause a trip when the problem is general degradation of a large number of similar devices.

Try Mr. Potter's strategy first but realize that there may be more than one culprit if the problem is not found quickly by using it.
