thickness sensor

We have a water bottling plant with automatic labeling. how ever the sensor on clear pvc labels does not trigger on the edge of the label .

i can't find such sensors eccept rockwell automation for a price of 600usd

Can you get the labels printed with an opaque bar on the leading edge? A basic optical pickup should be able to detect that.
