Dear all,

Flywheel effect. G is mass of motor rotor, D is the average (or effective) Diameter of the mass. Larger GD2 means more difficult to start up the motor. Smaller GD2 means easier to the start up. Each motor has different rotor GD2. ask motor vendor for a data-sheet. It is now more common to use inertia than GD2. Inertial is GR2, (R = D/2), so, Inertia is (GS2)/4.

How To calculate the GD2 Value of Wheel outer dia 500mm, inner dia 300mm, thickness of wheel is 180 mm. please explain in detail describing all the detail formulas.

Dear all,

Inner radius = 0.15m

Outer radius = 0.25 m

Width = 0.18m

Weight = 7800kg / m3 (assumed as steel)

Inertia = (0.25 ^2 - 0.15 ^2) x 1/2 x 0.18 x 7800 = 28.08 kg m2

GD2 = 4 x inertia = 112.32 kg m2

Dear Friend,

GD^2 Value is the ABILITY for motor or prime mover to start or move in a given time with out any problem. Higher the GD^2 value LESSER will be the Acceleration or PICK-UP of ROTATIONAL SPEED, and Vise-Versa.

In the case of Motor - the current drawn will be high for longer duration, if GD^2 is High and Vise-Versa. That is why Soft Starters, or Auto-Slip Resistors or Grid Resistance in the Rotor is used to limit the current and provide additional torque, which will accelerate fast, or or PICK-UP of ROTATIONAL SPEED fast.
