Proper Angle of Repose for Welding Under Small Trucks

04/07/2009 7:34 PM

Got this in my manufacturing news today and wondered if any one could help me figure the determinants of the angle shown.

Is height of curb more important than coefficient of friction of tire?

How can one determine contact patch (s) of tire?

What is the area of contact on two uprights?

Are these commercially available from the KrisDel(tm) Store?

Based on shadows, what is latitude, longitude and time of day?

Is the use of low hydrogen electrodes crucial to success?

Can anyone trump this photo for sheer darwinian stupidity?

Hi Milo,

Would be difficult to beat from an insanity view, but spare a thought for the guy who doesn't have a welder...............

Just look at the left side of this post for Latitude and Longitude. That guy is just down the street from me.

Good catch Bob, probably a TN substation or switch gear room!

The time of day is an unknown, but the latitude and longitude are: 33° 49' 0" N, 117° 56' 0" W because this one is in Disneyland!

How about the coefficient of friction of the 2x4s?

Just looking at this picture gives me the willies!

Seeing those 2x4 s on edge like that makes me imagine if bumped, they would scoot out and the truck would fold this guy up like a potato chip.

Progress Energy had a similar photo in thier in house safety section. It was a mid size PU truck with ONE 2x4 on level dirt, no curb. Makes my skin crawl!

Apparently one of those individuals to whom the concept and ramifications of "How much is this going to hurt?" is utterly foreign. Note how the forehead ends at the eyebrows.

I would suggest that in this picture the strength of the pressure plate against the clutch and the limited wear on the piston rings in all the cylinders combined are allowing for external forces to be applied to reach this angle of repose.

The rock against the rear tire shows there is a slope to the working enviorment that places pressure on drive train to hold the small truck in place.

This guy is just as crazy .

Floridian Alan Erickson REALLY has his crowd avoidance routine down... He monitors the ebb and flow of southern Florida's Everglades, knowing that during the winter (dry season) the alligators are far away... "You would not want to try this in the wet season," Alan warns.

Sure they are far away !! Sure they are !

Good choice if it is!

Who knows in this time of world recession he might just pick up a cheap 2 post ramp somewhere lol!

What on earth are you doing? What part is it you trying to weld of that Ute?

You don't need to tilt it like that if you have enough room under (I prefer a pit). As for using the type of electrode a normal rutile rod is fine however, try to use 'various' instead of 'General Purpose' type. Low hydrogen is good also but it requires DC power and has way too high tensile strength for this job.

Have some sparkling fun!

I'd bet he is welding the gas tank. If it blows, the truck will flip over and he will be safe, having calculated the angle that he will be forced back, he won't even get his feet caught under the truck as it rolls. I wonder if someone should put this up to the "Mythbusters" crew. Nevermind, they will just get it wrong anyway.

I don't think that's a welder, I think it's an HHO unit he is installing......how about it Del, aren't you the expert on that kind of thiing?
