Food-Safe Glass Glue?

04/09/2009 10:37 AM

I have a coffee urn with a broken glass bulb on top. Is there a glue, or other method of repair, that will be safe to be steamed above the liquid in my pot? I don't brew coffee in it, so there isn't any contact between liquids and the glass, but I just want to be on the safe side. Thanks for any help!

Cyanoacrylate "glass bond". Loads of trade names!

"steamed above the liquid in my pot"

It gets really hot and humid.

"there isn't any contact between liquids and the glass"

Except for the condensed steam running from the bulb.

"be on the safe side"

Get a new bulb.

I'm no expert here but I thought cyanoacrylate softened well before 100C and also slowly breaks down when exposed to water. Condensing steam is quite aggressive.

I would be inclined to look at some of the epoxies.

I think there is also a fairly high temp acrylic glue available.

Sorry I can't be more specific.

I'll look around.

I don't think cyanoacrylate is safe .. check out the list of glues on this site www.gluehow.com/recommendation/glass/to/glass

It says the Gordon glass one is safe up to 400F so sounds perfect for this :)
