Batteries that can be "wound up" with magnetism

04/17/2009 7:30 PM

University of Miami physicists have developed new "spin batteries" that are "wound up" with magnetism. I would like more details of the physics of how this is done. It looks like an exciting new breakthrough. How long do you think it will be until we can buy one? Here is the article.

I guess we'll see. I have my doubts: magnets are not a source of energy.

Good morning, Mikerho.

Magnetism is a potential energy. Combined with movement of a conductive wire in its field, converts the potential magnetic energy and the mechanical energy into electrical potential, which produces an electrical power when the terminals of the moving wire are connected through an electrical conductor.

The electrons have spin, momentum and are moving. Therefore when they are in a magnetic field it is understandable that an electrical potential could appear and that an electrical current could be generated, which could interact with the bond H-O-H.

Hi ARTRO,

I think that was what he was trying to say. These batteries are not a source of energy, but only a storage medium for energy. Nevertheless it is an exiting new prospect for many applications where batteries are used, such as cars. I think it will be a long time before that happens.

Thanks JD.

What is this about it making a better hard drive? Batteries have a million uses, and hard drives is not one of them. Why not say "This will power space ships to other planets"? or "This will save the economy"? I get so annoyed when all they can think of is a better computer.

Hi SG.

I suppose people are confined to their own limits, reminds me of that famous statement, why do you want to put so many transistors on a chip, what use will that be?

Regards JD.

I don't want to get too far off subject but, there has been a recent development from MIT where a laptop has been powered by a micro-turbine generator.

The source of fuel is the butane cartridges normally used for cigarette lighters. The only obstacle is what to do with the hot exhaust gases as well as airport security concerns.

I have always believed that the answer to our energy problems lie in the the natural forces of the earth's magnetic and gravitational fields. Hanna-Barbera may not have been too far off when they produced the animated sitcom, The Jetson's.

ok a few things i see here

1) moving the magnets and the coils was due to the old magnets going dead no reason now to move them.

2) this was nano and was as small as the hair on your head i want to see it run a home !

3) see my unit if you are in toronto as it will be at the greenliving show in the showcase our units can power your home and run your car !

just a rant on sunday from me back to this topic again !
