Scrap hunt

04/23/2009 4:58 PM

Not going to let the Cat out of the bag quite yet, however, I am working on a project and I need some help locating some required articles.

I am hunting for aluminum extrusions that are scrap or surplus to needs.

I have quite a few articles I am looking for; anyone have an aircraft fuselage they don't need?

CR4 will have a blog spot for this project once things start to happen, and I hope everyone will be enjoy this detraction. Moose loved the idea, but he is not talking either.

thanks for that, I have been hunting Google with the wrong words, aircraft disassemble got me to a place right away, I called them and they have a couple old aircraft about to be scrapped, very cool.

He will get out sooner if I can find a suitable vehicle for this project, looking for a transport size vehicle, cab over, garbage truck would be good, or a fire truck.

i have a lead on a vehicle in Vermont but i will not hear until next week, until then I am still looking.

Okay, good luck and have fun with your project .

Oh, by the way, in case you didn't know this, cats bury their droppings, so expect Del to create a real mess in that bag trying to find some place to bury his wastes .

Check auction sites like the federal or state government surplus auctions. They often have large trucks for sale cheap. Even fire trucks aren't to hard to find. I've often thought about buying a fire truck to play with.

I have been following the auction sites and the various listing sites, problem is there are far too many for sale, how does one find a good one.

I was looking at several at dealers in your neck of the woods that had Cab Over trucks.

Interested in doing your project here in Panama? At the local commuter airport there are a number of aircraft of different sizes and descriptions sitting in a particular area- I'm not sure they are all intended for the scrap heap (some are likely awaiting the outcome of legal proceedings related to illegal business dealings), but they seem to just sort of disappear with time- first, the landing gear, lights, the sort of things easily collected during midnight requisition escapades- ultimately, if they sit there long enough, all that is left is the fuselage. As to the truck, we could probably find just about anything you are looking for in just about any stage of decay you would prefer...

I would love to, only problem I see is shipping all my fabrication tools and materials south and then setting up a fabrication facility.

Summer is almost here, at very least I get to work outside for a couple of months.

Re: Scrap hunt

I called an extrusion manufacturer long ago to ask if they could make curved extrusions of varying radii.

After being sorta "cussed out" by the engineer who explained to me that they had spent years trying to figure out ways to NOT get curved extrusions, he and I concluded that, yes, it could be done, but the die design would be prohibitively expensive.

The bottom line is that they don't produce much scrap at the manufacturing level, as they remelt it and try again.

There are tons of beer cans available around here, of which I'm personally responsible for about 10%. Is that a suitable type of aluminum?

I saw a nice large aircraft fusilage from a First Air, twin turbo prop, that still had about 40 seats left in it. It was at a scrap yard outside of Pakenham, Ontario. Ed's Salvage.

What are you planing on making ?

I spoke to First Air earlier this week, I have to get out to Ed's one of these days, quite the character Ed is.

Can't say yet what I am up to, still looking for a suitable chassis.

Ed will probably ask you to put it on a scale and sell it to you based on the current price of Aluminum. Aircraft grade, primo prices.

Hope he hasn't scraped it yet.

I live in Ottawa as well. need a hand with your project ?

Re: Scrap hunt

Knowing Ed the way i do i would expect him to have one foot on the scale as well.

Al has dropped through the floor with the current down turn in manufacturing of everything, so he may want to keep it until the price goes back up.

First Air offered me a 748 that is at the end of service, I may have to make them some sort of deal to fet it flown into Carp, it is in trois rivier currently.

Once construction starts i am going to need lots of help, always good to have extra hands and an extra brain working on the project . Drop me a line off list.

Re: Scrap hunt

05/09/2009 10:46 AM

I seem to have run into a small bit of difficulty, some of the companies I have called are not taking me very seriously. No one will return a call!!!

OK granted calling aircraft dismantles asking for wing sections is probably not a call they regularly get. I need a wing section, two actually, that are 20 feet long from the wing tip to the cutoff point.

Wings are normally thought of as scrap and i thought I would not have any problems finding a set. Who knew???

I would prefer the wing to be at lease 10 feet wide at the cut point but that is not a necessity, I can work with a slightly smaller section.

Anyone out there near a a company who dismantles aircraft?

maybe you could try the National Aviation Museum there in Ottawa?

or here is a link to the alberta avaiation museum exec director (similar to CR4)

I suspect that such people may be able to point you in the right direction.. other than that, I have no idea.
