Hello http://cr4.globalspec.com/member?u=24675, If you are talking of a 'binding course' on tarmac? I have seen this done only on 'local' estate roads, not on highways. It is usually a sprayed layer of hot tar and grit spread on top. No rolling. Hope this helps Take Care

Hi, http://www.leics.gov.uk/index/highways/road_pathway_maintenance/htd/highway_req_development_part4.htm#section_mc10_surface_and_binder Check out the detail on this link. It refers to an English local road. Take care, and hope it is useful !

For top courses over existing bituminous concrete pavement, we (Connecticut, USA)apply a material called "tack coat" {A tack coat is a thin bituminous liquid asphalt, emulsion or cutback layer applied between HMA pavement lifts to promote bonding. }which aids the adhesion between the old and new material. It is also applied when the existing pavement is cold planed (also called milling or scarification). Application rates are approximately 0.2 liters per square meter.

Consult a professional with more local knowledge of approved methods.
