Followup Question from Mac vs. PC Thread

04/29/2009 3:24 PM

While reading the thread about Mac Vs. PC, I thought of a recent problem I had and wanted to see if someone might have some input...I have an idea it is Vista causing the problem. I have searched the web for info on it to no avail.

Here is the deal: I bought a fancy schmancy gateway (lx 6810...I might have gone dislexic, that might be 8610 or 1086) that runs vista. This computer has a tuner card and all of the multimedia bells and whistles. In addition, it has a set of analog inputs (RCA jacks) on the front of the computer.

After moving all of the furniture out of my living room to refinish the oak floors, my son decided he wanted to play his Nintendo Wii. Rather than hook everything up to the displaced television, I thought I'd just plug it into the analog ports on the computer and he could play to his heart's content. The analog ports should interface with the tuner just like with a TV, right? Wrong!

What's up with that? How do I make my tuner work like an ordinary TV? Is it indeed the Evil Empire trying to make me buy an X-Box? Is it possible to use these ports? I tryed to use gateway's help, but didn't think I should have to spend $50 buck for their support. I read the manual, it merely says the ports are there. I found an article that said you could run an X-box via USB and some extender (software) nonsense, but that MS didn't make an extender for Wii....Go figure...

<grumble, grumble....grumble, grumble....>

Dear DAG,

Your fancy shmancy system is not able to connect because the Wii signals are not compatible with your PC.Analog/Digital TV Tuner with 3-D Comb Filter.

You need a special cable:
Wii / PS3 VGA Cable - Connects your Nintendo Wii / Playstation 3 to Your PC Monitor or HDTV
$29.85

Just a question, is there an input on your computer for cable, from that matter I don't even know if that Xbox has an RG6 connector on it.

As far as Vista I have recently purchased a new laptop, and then purchased a USB tuner .The media Center seems to perform fairly well, just need to push more buttons on the remote to figure everything out.

Don't feel like a moron it's a trick, reading the manual will do no good. I have also recently upgraded a friends memory in their Toshiba laptop, in the section concerning memory upgrades the manual simply stated take to authorized Toshiba dealer.

After considerable online research I found no information on how to access the memory, after disassembling the computer with the same care as disarming a bomb, I located the memory under the keyboard, with a sticker on the access to the memory compartment, referrer to manual for memory replacement procedures

Yes. The computer has a cable input. That's the reason I bought that particular computer. I wanted to have the multimedia capacity. I have really enjoyed it so far. I have an Idea this is the way things are going, entertainment and computing merging together...
