Is Dell Embracing Open Source?

05/07/2009 3:31 PM

Not a big fan myself of spreading Internet rumors, but I heard from a colleague today that Dell might be planning to adopt Google's open-source operating system for a line of new, low-cost "netbook" computers. Most credible Internet source I could find just now is a write-up - click here to view - from CNET News reporter, Erica Ogg.

Does anyone in the CR4 community know the source of this information, and what Dell's plans might be?

Seems like this would be an important shift in Dell's business model, if true. Thanks in advance for folks sharing here in this discussion thread.

- Larry

I thought I saw them selling computers with Ubuntu, or one of its variations.

Many thanks, Roger. Between the Android and Ubuntu open-source OS's, looks like the evidence is building that Dell is increasingly going down a new path for operating systems. It would be interesting to know what Microsoft thinks of this and how they might respond. - Larry

bwire-

More like switching from Yugo to Lamborghini- especially when one considers that the last guy I knew who had a Lamborghini drove it for about a month, then left it parked in the garage for more than two years waiting for a new drive shaft that had to be special-ordered from Italy...

Irony, he could have ordered through GM tech library with an expected delivery of six weeks

A car with different options is better then just buying MS Pinto.

But Jokes asides, it is giving customers Choice, which is always a good thing.

Actually it is taking advantage of an uninformed group and the systems demise has already been adjudicated. MS is currently incorporating use of open source in near future releases and what we're discussing now will be left in the dust not unlike cassette tapes.
