Good Answers

It is a great pleasure of being a member in CR4. I thoroughly enjoy forum and happy to participate by answering few questions where my experience is relevant.

There has to be purpose for the indication of the 'number of Posts and number of Good Answers' among the member detail. It surely conveys an impression (though it shouldn't but that particular answer/discussion should) among the participants.

Though it looks a bit childish, I think it natural see a good ratio of Good Answers / Posts. When the answers are regarded as 'Good Answer', the enthusiasm gets pep up, an honored feeling by peers.

Of late I don't see a rise in the Good Answers I am getting. But I have a feeling that this count is not automated. By what mechanism these counts are updated? Just curious, please pardon me if my guesstimate on counts are wrong.

Re: Good Answers

I believe they are updated immediately. It takes two good ratings for an answer to be considered "good". When rating a post, the rater can either add to the "votes" by marking it a good answer, or subtract from the "votes". If they subtract, then it is possible that something marked as a "good answer" can lose it's "good answer" rating. This doesn't happen often, but it can happen, and may explain why you believe you have more good answers than you are seeing.

I agree, the GA/Off-Topic Votes seem to be immediately updated.

Unfortunately getting a vote of 1 GA doesn't get you anywhere as it doesn't count toward your GA rating.

"getting a vote of 1 GA doesn't get you anywhere"

This where I got confused, thanks for this clarification.

Funny, I was thinking of this just a moment ago.

More along the lines of How many Good answers are actually more Witty or Entertaining answers.

I think perhaps we need another answer rating category?

I think you should participate when you feel compelled or when you feel competent to help the OP, and forget about getting GA's.

They will come to you when the other participants feel you deserve them, not when you do.

BTW, there is a FAQ place somewhere around here that answers all these questions.

Hello yesyen,

It is the other Members who vote your remarks a GA or not.

And they are updated as soon as you click anywhere on the page and it moves.

You may have thought the Admin vote, they do not. Though they can ban someone who is rude or troublesome, or stop them from voting. Leastways that is how I think it works.

I hope you stay and help answer any questions you are interested in. Answer more and you will likely build your GA score as well.

I know this question of GA's has gone back and forth before, with some liking it and others not. But I guess the majority must like it. Getting enough votes for a GA I think says they respect you and your opinions, which is why they bother to vote. And it kind of say "thank you".

However, the site is first and foremost a help and question answering forum. The score of GA's does tend to show you know how and what type of answer is understandable to most.

I think there is a whole lot of clever people on the site, and more importantly, they can explain things very well, either to someone who is new to a certain subject, or who know it inside out!

Take care and enjoy. Do not be afraid of saying what you want just as you would in any conversation.

Totally agree with your comments (1 GA, especially for your Quote ;-) ), what is frustrating sometimes however is when you have answered a question to a post (and you are about the only one replying) and the postee doesn't come back with a "thank you" even though you know your answer is spot on.

Hi yesyen.

The good answers are given by other members of the forum not an automated computer program, also they can give you an off topic which detracts your good answer.

You will find that even though you might have given a good answer other posters will receive a good answer for something that was not as good as yours it is not a detraction against your answer it is just that the person who gave the good answer does not understand the discussion or have not read all of the posts. also there are groups who tend to support each other which distorts the good answer system.

All in all don't worry good answers are not totally reflective of your efforts it is enough that you have given a response which you think is good and that is the main requirement,

Enjoy your stay with this interesting forum and have fun.

Garth.

This was originally about whether the admin works as as it says on the can. So far as we can judge (and Del's increased risk of gout due to consuming too many tins of sardines is strong support for this) the accounting system works properly.

Whether this is meaningful is up to all of us, as GAs are awarded by "the community". On which subject I have made the following notes:
a) Amusing is at least as highly regarded as accurate
b) Easily comprehensible is more valuable than comprehensive
c) Easily comprehensible and wrong is frequently more valued than difficult and accurate
d) It is better to give than to receive (by which I mean that it is better to post an answer that you have checked out is genuinely helpful than to receive votes for G.A.
e) Nobody likes a smart-ass
f) <= I shouldn't be rude

yesyen,

Just a few remarks here.............

To Lynlynch: You are right, points often are awarded on the least likely of subjects.

Del, You should be on stage!

Garth, Thanks for actually saying the first line of your post, I completely forgot to mention it specifically!

Physicist, Ref:You are far from being rude! And ref: Easily comprehensible and wrong......... If someone like me is wrong it can often lead to a new direction in the thread and more knowledge?

Dutchy, Many thanks! And yes it can make you wonder why you help the OP when you get no feedback, for sure!

Take care to you all, bb

Hi Babybear

<= was referring to the potentially isolated item f). Basically proving that I can be a smartass...

Your comment:
Indeed, intelligently and honestly wrong can lead to great things.
On the other hand, I have great trouble getting my mind around threads where only incorrect postings and wilticisms are awarded GAs, and the technically correct answers are effectively ignored; the reason that it worries me is that a significantly valuable function of GAs should be to help people who are interested in the topic of a thread to find useful answers.

Yes, some times it happens. The technically wrong answer gets GA and really good answer gets ignored.

I am not sure, but, may be this problem will be reduced, if Almost GA is awarded after 3 GAs and GA is awarded after 4 GA, instead of 1 and 2 respectively.

Besides, one should not feel guilty is giving negative rating for technically wrong answer, even if some other participant gives GA to it.

Hello Physicist,

Yes I understand what you mean when ALL that get GA's is comic stuff. But, as people use the site and 'people' award those kind of remarks etc GA's then it is something we have to live with? And, you are a smartass...............coz you is clever man!
