Light vs. Current

05/22/2009 1:02 PM

many dont know that light has some similarities with electric current .when current flows magnetic and electric fields are produced perpendicular to each other .same happens with light too.the question is then why cant we use effectively the light in electrical engineering.does anybody have new ideas.

We do use light in electrical engineering. Solar cells, light detectors, fiber optics, etc.

Magnetic and electric fields are produced perpendicular to path of travel of light?

Yep - light is electromagnetic radiation.

Damn, shifted to mathematics just a step too soon.

photons are made of electromagnetic energy and are self driven motors. Electric or magnetic fields do not extend to large distances from its path in perpendicular plain and has exponential reduction in field strength for a distance. Solar cell example is the best one to trap the energy of photons. You can also simply use the energy to heat water. Photon of an energy has its own properties and not all types of photons will let you charge the solar cells. Gamma rays that can kill cancer in no time can not even increase the water temperature to 1C for your cup of tea.
