Linksys Network Card Disconnects

05/23/2009 5:14 AM

Hi, I have a bit of a bizarre question, that I have a linksys wireless card, that periodically disconnects. It has about 80% signal. The card has done this on the two computers that I have used it with. On the last one the aerial got snapped off, but there was still enough thread to re-attach it. Could this be the problem, or could it be a software related issue? I am using the windows monitoring solution thingy, because I hate the linksys one. Thanks Bondy111

I would say without a shadow of a doubt it is your adapter my friend. Sounds to me like a loose connection... Strip it to bits man! if good old elbow grease wont sort it then go for a firmware update and if not.... time to buy Edimax products from me xD.

Peace out.

Are you saying it worked on one of your computers before ?

Unfortunately you must check for updates for everything:

Firmware version on wireless card

Software driver for wireless card

System software up to date ?

I have had to frequently update the firmware of many wireless products. Unless I misunderstood you, if none of that helps, you have a hardware issue for sure.

Yes, it worked previously on a different computer, and periodically disconnected even before the aerial was snapped off. System software is up to date - XP pro SP3 Wireless card firmware is the firmware that came with it.

I think you should have better results when you change the channel of you WAP/ W-router. Sometimes your neighbourhood changes (more wireless networks) which have influence on your network. The more wireless networks in the same range/channel the more problems you could have.

If you are using ch11 switch to ch 6, if using ch6 try ch4 or ch2.

We have 2 other wireless cards - cheap ones of ebay, and 3 laptops which never disconnect. I would put a different wireless card in, but I have lost the CD.

I wonder what could be your problem coz I have the same windows (XP) pro and when I go to check out what's available nearby I can pick up the same network (unsecured) and it just keeps on working until it drops out due to low signal (@1 bar).

I believe that is the only reason rather than software nd mine is 'Inspiron | 6000' pretty old.

In your case maybe should check the card firmware but I just recall a friend who kept having the same problem until the PCB was reflowed.

Change the encryption level in your wireless router and reassign a new account.
