"O-Let fittings were created for use when a branch requires reinforcement (as opposed to a plain Stub-In). It is cheaper (Labor wise) than the "Pad" type reinforced branch.

Weld-O-Lets should only be used for Butt-Weld pipe branches in sizes normally 3" (80mm) and larger when reinforcement is required.

Sock-O-Lets should only be used for Socket-Weld pipe branches in sizes 2" (50mm) and smaller and may be cost effective for both reinforced and non-reinforced situations.

Thread-O-Lets should only be used for Screwed pipe branches in sizes 2" (50mm) and smaller and may be cost effective for both reinforced and non-reinforced situations.

Weldolet is connected to the branch using full groove weld, where sockolet is connected to the branch by fillet weld. While the both (weldolet & sockolet) are connected to the main run/vessel by groove weld subsequent by a fillet weld. To see the difference between the both welds from strength point of view, please see my posts #4, 7 & 12 of CR4 Thread Socket Welds vs. Butt Welds.
