Motor Encoders and Roller Encoders

06/03/2009 7:56 AM

We have a plate making machine which has two identical roller sets, at the input & output side respectively, the plate passes through these pair of rollers & encoders are mounted at each end of the roller, the other end has the drive motor. This is to ensure consistent movement of the plate .

Please let me know the correct working of a motor encoder & a roller encoder...do they work in a similar fashion? Secondly, when we specify the encoder as say 2000 segment encoder, what exactly this numeric figure means?

Re: Regarding motor encoder & roller encoder

The encoder is a rotational counting device. Internally there is a disc that is coupled to the roller or motor that we wish to monitor. The disc is etched with holes in which a light shines thru to a receiver. The 2000 segment is the number of holes the greater the number the greater the precision. Its a division of the 360 degree rotation of the axle. The count information can now be used by a program to control the motor.
