Weatherproof Decking

06/04/2009 1:38 PM

Does anyone know a good alternative to torch down roofing material for weather proofing an outdoor deck in the great Pacific Northwest? I'm trying to make a deck/roof combo but would rather not set my house on fire--at least not yet.

Terrazzo or concrete, torch down roofing wouldn't last and the tracking potential is very high, how to keep it out of the house.

However there are decking systems designed for just this type situation.

You may want to try a product like DecTec. www.dec-tec.com

Goosemydog,

Have you considered EPDM roofing materials? They are available in different thicknesses and widths. Standard form is black, but a white is also sold.

Yes, I have considered EPDM. It's tough stuff but I think too slippery to walk on if wet and can probably puncture easier than other things like urethane coatings. I have found a couple that appear affordable and am also considering marine deck coatings. Have not check with stores yet but hope to today. Thanks for suggestions.

Roof deck systems of this nature are available.

or

Think about it. In between the joists lay roof sheathing supported by cleats underneath. Apply EPDM upon the sheathing between each joist and rising up the inside of joist bay. Cap the upper edge of the joist with a preformed flashing to extend over the upper edge of EPDM. Set decking materials on the joists in a conventional manner.

The sheathing between the joists need extend to the edge of roof to drain.

I used CWF http://www.flood.com/flood/ on my decking when in PAC NW.

I appreciate all the comments and I like EPDM--use some for other purposes now, but after much searching and some detective work I think I've come up with an economical, easy to apply solution. All the urethanes look great but are very expensive so I thought, what do fishing boat decks use? I contacted a local marine retailer and he told me. I plan to go check out his deck paint that also has traction built in, in a day or so, because it is half the price of the least expensive urethane product. Also, there would be no other constuction need above it. The only draw back I can see is it doesn't come in a variety of colors.
