junk mail

06/06/2009 3:18 AM

I am fed up with having to unsubscribe from Emails. Why can they not make it a rule that a reply should be sent to indicate that a subscription is wanted. People using dial-up, as here in South Africa for example, have to pay up to reply! WWW. should make the practice unacceptable . Outlook express gives an option to put on spammers into the deleted box on a but that does not turn the pests off.

Don't give out your e-mail address ?

I'm sure there must be a setting to reject messages from <whoever> you visit, though I'm not sure. ie : add to blocked list onlyvisitedonce.com

If it's a case that there are people you want to hear from on just one occasion, set up an e-mail address for that type of thing (technical brochures/whatever). At least it will keep it apart from stuff you want (colleagues/friends). You shouldn't have a problem setting up multiple addresses for different categories of mail ; family/business/hobby etc.

Getting chucked on someone's mailing list is annoying, but reputable places give you the option to decline further sales info. I dunno if this helps;

Oh come now! Everyone is inundated with spam on a daily basis. You sound like you're one of them. I find it interesting that no one has come up with a decent email program that can truly discriminate from wanted emails vs. the crap. Think some people are getting paid to keep the status quo?

Nope - hardly ever get any crap to block. What gave you the notion I did? The reason I posted to this thread is because I'm curious about how people get into the position in the first place. I see the occasional financial scam-mail on some accounts, but it get's auto filtered (not that the headers are exactly hard to spot).

Err...Never check the unsubscribe box in an email... this only validates your email address...stop feeding the trolls.

Request a new IP address from your ISP.

Don't use outlook express if you can avoid it.

Keep your system up to date, use a good A/V tool and antispyware tool that compliment each other.

Hello hazman,

as the posts from 'wire' and 'Kris' explain, the details about keeping up to date with your anti spam etc, so you can configure your anti spam as you get mail etc.

You have to look real closely at the way the question is phrased on any site you want to ask for regular updates. Some you have to tick to get a reply, and some you get a reply if you 'do not' tick!

I cannot see how you can legislate for that? You just have to read and understand what you tick and whether or not you should actually tick to receive, or not. Other than that I would keep a note of the address and pop along every so often to see what updates there have been. In the mean time, go to the site and click to 'not' get any more updates.

Hope this was helpful...................

Hello bb,

Legislating wouldn't help the action is a violation as it is already, but as you say eliminating the opportunity is key

I would just like to make the "unsubscribe" function illegal. OK for "Click here to subscribe" why should we, and particularly people with dial-up, have to have the nuisance. This would help in the address confirmation problem.

Use of the "unsubscribe" function is voluntary, don't use it. Being aware and informed of hazards in your environment is the nature of all things in life.

Use of the "unsubscribe" function is voluntary, don't use it. Being aware and informed of hazards in your environment is the nature of all things in life.

Instead of falling for the con don't. Your operating system avails you to several filters and other methods to block unwanted content. Check it out, check it out, check it out in "Internet Options" using the "Security", "Privacy" and "Content" tabs you may eliminate access of any trouble some parties you care to avoid contact with.

At the start menu open "Help and Support" then select "Security and Maintenance", thoroughly examine the capabilities within to configure the system to meet your preferences.

The incredible Spam Museum is an online visual repository for spam, scam and fraud emails.

The SPAM® Museum is dedicated to the delicious meat first created at the Hormel Foods Corporation plant in 1937. It's a fun and informational destination ...

Don't blame the spammer, blame yourself. Most the time they didn't steal your email. You've sign up to some free deal at some website which pass/sell your email.

So get two email, one for use and one for signup stuff.

Ok if you live in outer space but not in the real world. I have a website and so I have an email for contact. I do not give out my email to the world for general use (or abuse) - they steal it for ulterior motives. All I am suggesting that the option to unsubscribe is anti social - if they wish to maintain contact then the option to subscribe should be given, as some sites do.

" I do not give out my email to the world for general use (or abuse)"

You did by putting it on your website.

BTW I don't mind living in outer space or the unknown region if I have the chance

You'll need a mail server that can filter email from a "blacklist". Now without any knowledge on your email setup, there is not much help I or other could give you.

Crikey - I never noticed that !

Hazman : How does anybody know that they wouldn't get spam from mailing you via your web page ? I'm not suggesting you'd actually do anything of the kind, but you could be collecting IP addresses and e-mails, and then doing gawd knows what. Personally it wouldn't phase me to e-mail you if I was following something you had, but what of all the people like yourself who're concerned ? Are you asking the question to solve a spam problem you have yourself, or to find a way of re-assuring people who visit your web page?

btw, do you, I'm just speculating, use sitemeter ?
