Full Penetration Weld vs. Fillet / Partial Penetration Weld

06/10/2009 2:37 AM

Dear all..

Need your help here..

1. What are the considerations to choose full penetration weld over partial penetration weld?

2. Is there any relationship between full penetration weld and integral forging?

Thanks all..

The full Vs partial pentertration weld selection is only based on the mechanical strength requirements,(a number of Welding hand books as well as ASME literatures will give you the weld strength)

If the component is under fatique then you don't have any choice than the full penetration welds.

Certain components the code requirement also enforces the full penetration, but that is also due to above two reasons.

There is a lot of difference between full penetration welding and integral forging (and there is no doubt about the superiority)

In the welding, along with the usual defects (le us neglect them) you have the disturbances in the micro structures as well as grain alignments and the HAZ is usually prone to fatigue failure.

In our rotating components, no welding is carried out (we have certain forgings that are welded to make sort of fabrications) - any whre near the high stressed and notched sensitive zones.

In fact the welding is at a place where the HAZ do not reach near these notches or high stress areas.

THE MOST IMPORTANT CONSDIREATION IS '' STRENGTH OF JOINT'' & IF YOUR JOINT IS UNDER CYCLIL LOADING IT MUST BE F.P.W. NO RELATION BETWEEN F.P.W & INTEGRAL FORGING> AS I UNDERSTAND YOU ARE WORKING IN OIL & GAS LINE & ASKING ABOUT INTEGRAL NOZZLE? PL CLARIFY THEN I WILL EXPLAIN U VERY CLEARLY

Dear Mukesh, please do not use caps.

It is considered to be impolite (akin to shouting)

• Please refer to the following CR4 Threads: Application of Weldolet and Sockolet & Socket Welds vs. Butt Welds.

• And refer to the following interesting site: www.gowelding.com for more details of welding & materials.

Thanks for all comments and links..

My application is Propane storage.. I'm confused about determining which welding type that suitable for the connection of opening/nozzle and its reinforcement pad.

Thanks all. Any comments would be excellent.

These have to be as per the ASME code and that will limit your options (oof doing partial penetration) as well as Forged Vs welded (nozzles or flanges).

Just follow the relevant code

link, may be useful for relevant ASME and NFPA 58 codes
