Designing Sustainable Drying of Vegetation/ Organic Matter

06/15/2009 1:08 AM

The illustration here presents a Sustainability Engineered Design concept: Drying wet/ green vegetation and other such organic matter, without grid-electricity or without using any fossil fuel based energy systems.

The atmospheric temperature conditions could be considered as in the following illustration

The materials input per batch is to be decided based on the following:

  1. Average minimum moisture content in the input materials could be taken as around 65% to 70%. Input materials are: Various Plants, vegetables, Farm wastes, kitchen wastes, wood chips, animal wastes, etc in different combination of volumes ( to be considered as not easily ascertained nor practical to be considered)
  2. The final dried material to have about 7% to 9% equilibrium moisture
  3. Daily Total "wet" materials to be dried = 2 tons
  4. Each Module could be one-fourth the "full volume" drying needs
  5. As the top water spray is to be done using animal power, we need not consider that energy need in this design – except that water spray is available. Only design aspect here would be to assess how much volume (rate) water is needed
  6. It is also assumed that the input materials are in shredded form (approximately 25 mm to 50 mm max sizes) … or the design could suggest the sizes to be used

We shall name this: SELF GENERATED VACUUM EVAPORATOR-CONDENSER (SGVEC)

Interesting concept, but I don't think you will see a vacuum, and I don't see any energy source for the airflow? If anything, the heated air will cause a rise in pressure, imho.

I do think that the system will heat the material, and that the moisture/heat will rise, and that if you pumped cool water through the membranes, you could definitely get rid of the moisture. I don't see that it will not cost you something in energy though. I recommend some solar panels to power the pumps and fans.
