There is no single book I am aware of as numerous skills and engineering disciplines are required.

More information is required. What is the application? What size of turbine are you talking about, and what level of engineering training and experience do you have?

For a project like this your best bet is a search of the internet for "12V DIY home wind turbine design" or similar.

There are plenty of step-by-step guides which give you the basics on how to build your own little wind turbine, and plenty of commercial products you can get ideas from or incorporate into your design depending on just how complex you want to make it (for example you can buy the blades and voltage regulator instead of making them).

Hi...

An industrial Wind turbine design will involve:

  1. Design of Blades.
  2. Design of the Nassele assembly comprising the hub, shafts, bearings, gear box, generator, brakes, yawing mechanism, lubrication, cooling, cables, sound proofing etc.
  3. Design of supporting Tower.
  4. Design of foundation.
  5. Design of turbine control system.
  6. Design of power evacuation system.

You will require to study the wind data and analyse it for suitability of selecting size of Turbine.

I suggest you read Wind Power by Annamani publised by Dept of Renewable Energy, Govt of India to appraise yourself as this is the only bible available for wind power in India.

Hi...

Firstly, propellers are meant to move or propel the units on which they are mounted e.g. aircrafts, ships etc move front or back due to propeller action.

In a wind turbine or a fan the unit is stationery whereas the blade cuts through the wind at an angle to draw power from the flowing the media or to make it flow like in a fan. These are therefore called a blades. The blades are based on a aerofoil design. It is aeronautical theory about which I can't tell you much. I know that the prototypes of wind turbine blades are tested in a wind tunnel.

LM Glasfibre is a large Danish wind turbine blade manufacturer. They have 3units at Bangalore. You may contact them at : LM Glasfiber (India) Pvt. Ltd,

These guys will help you. Actually you want to make a small turbine which are almost like toys. We all are experienced in large WEGs i.e. MW sizes and I've installed some of the largest machines in India with blade diameters 50meters & above.

Dear Anil Tiwari jee,

Your answer to the question is the most sensible one, as after a long gap I found a reply that reflect the required quality of discussions on CR4.

Many people like Rajesh spend time to put their problems on forms like CR4, but you must have seen the quality of answers.

Fortunately I too have interests in Wind and Solar Energy Applications. After having done my Ph.D. in the field of Renewable sources of Energy, from IIT Delhi, I am working with ONGC at Chief Engr. level.

You have mentioned about the help LM Glasfibre can give on Wind energy design.
But from the query it seems that Rajesgh is looking for some software that can help him design a small wind generator.

There are some replies which say DIY type of designs, I do not think they will meet the requirement of Rajesh, as he is persuing his B.Tech degree and a design for 1 of 2 KW capacity should be more appropriate for his B.Tech project.

I would request Rajesh to contact Prof. T.S. Bhatti of (CES) Centre for Energy Studies, I.I.T. Delhi to look for help on suitable size and design of wind generator. As he is expert on wind energy systems and guides B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D. students of CES

Dear Dr Singh,

Many thanks for your observation.

I was fortunate to have pioneered installation of wind turbines in India. Currently, India has a very large installed capacity next only to USA & Germany. However, the Indian wind programme has not accelerated in a manner a technocrat would have liked. The culprit was the government's tax sops to business houses who installed wind turbines. This tax holiday resulted in several quick installations of sub-standard equipment. Indian installations have one of the worst capacity utilization figures anywhere in this industry both in terms of output and machine availability. As it is India is not bestowed with high wind zones like in Germany & Denmark.

As a researcher and a scientist with ONGC you must seriously look at viability of off-shore installations. In 1992-93 the then renewable ministry officials laughed at us when we made this suggestion pleading that even in a vast country like India land will be a scarce resource. Today, this is very much true. We must realise that our coastline is our greatest resource. Moreover, at sea the wind encounters a roughness factor of zero as there are no losses due to trees or buildings etc. In this country only ONGC has infrastructure to build off-shore Wind Farms. Try and convince your bosses. It will benefit all.

Contact the Centre for Alternative Technology, at Machynlleth in Wales (usual disclaimer). Their website will have a number of publications available for world-wide mail-order.

Hi Rajesh,

There are lots of content available on net, google it, For your desired output check Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) and Magnatic Levitated wind mills. Check You tube with key word wind mill and you'll get some real good models.

*Im currently working for VAWT so if you face any problem approach me im in mumbai.
