Ammonium Nitrate Process Condensate - Reuse in Nitric Acid Production

06/19/2009 7:28 AM

The Process Condensate from First Effect Evaporator in Ammonium Nitrate production contains some Ammonia and Ammonium nitrate.I want to use it as feed water into Nitric Acid Absorption column as feed water. What effects does Ammonia have in the Absorption column? Is there a limit on the Ammonium nitrate load permissible?

On this and your othr post, I would suggest that a sketch of the process would be helpful to clarify what you are trying to do.

You must first adjust the pH of the process condensate to eliminate free ammonia before adding it to the nitric acid absorption tower. Adding ammonia to a nitric acid absorption tower can result in the formation of ammonium nitrite, which can carryover into the tailgas heater. Ammonium nitrite is very unstable.
